Preview Roundups
December 10, 2014
North Carolina Central at Maryland 7:00 PM ET
With its winning streak to start the season ended, No. 20 Maryland will look to start another streak Wednesday when it plays visiting North Carolina Central. The Terrapins rebounded from a loss to No. 7 Virginia by defeating Winthrop on Saturday and can make it two in a row by downing the Eagles, who come in riding a five-game win streak of their own.
Arkansas St. at Purdue 7:00 PM ET
Purdue looks to secure its fifth win in the last six games when it hosts Arkansas State for the first time on Wednesday. The Boilermakers bounced back from their disappointing loss to North Florida - which snapped their 12-game non-conference home winning streak - with a 63-43 victory over in-state rival IPFW on Monday. "We learned that you can't take any team for granted," freshman guard Dakota Mathias told reporters. "A good team adjusts to what happens and that's what we did."
Columbia at Kentucky 7:00 PM ET
When it comes to No. 1 Kentucky and its roster loaded with former McDonald's All-Americans, the only question is which one of their stars will dominate on a nightly basis. On Sunday, it was Karl-Anthony Towns, who scored a career-high 19 points while adding nine rebounds and four blocks in a lopsided win over Eastern Kentucky. The freshman forward looks to score in double figures for the fifth straight game Wednesday when the Wildcats host Columbia.
Rhode Island at Providence 7:00 PM ET
Providence's fast start and rare appearance in the national polls are a distant memory. Losers of three straight, the Friars get another crack at a local foe when they host Rhode Island on Wednesday in the 127th meeting. After a road loss at No. 1 Kentucky and a setback at Boston College, Providence figured to have a streak-buster at home Monday against Brown, but showed a lack of effort in a stunning 77-67 loss.
High Point at Ohio St. 7:00 PM ET
A team approach to offense has boosted Ohio State to six victories in seven games, and the No. 12-ranked Buckeyes look to continue their strong start when they host High Point on Wednesday. “When anyone’s in a little slump, we’re a close enough team that we can get them out of it,” freshman Kam Williams told reporters after Saturday’s 70-50 victory over Colgate.
Kansas at Georgetown 7:00 PM ET
Kansas continues its rugged early-season schedule and goes for its sixth consecutive victory when it visits Georgetown on Wednesday. It's the first true road game for the 10th-ranked Jayhawks, who are coming off a six-point victory over Florida on Friday - their only game since claiming the Orlando Class championship to close out November. Kansas has played four neutral-site games, including a 72-40 thumping at the hands of No. 1 Kentucky.
SE Oklahoma State at Tulsa 8:00 PM ET
Tulsa looks for its second three-game win streak of the season when it hosts Division II Southeastern Oklahoma State on Wednesday. The Golden Hurricane survived a scare at Arkansas-Little Rock last time out, prevailing 78-73 for its first road win of the season. Guard James Woodard, the reigning American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, posted his first double-double of the season for Tulsa with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Incarnate Word at Nebraska 8:00 PM ET
With its core back from an NCAA Tournament squad and a preseason ranking, Nebraska had high hopes entering the season, but double-digit home losses to in-state rivals soured the faithful. Following a rough showing at home, the Cornhuskers look to get back on track when they host Incarnate Word on Wednesday. 'We emptied our own gym. ... That's a low point for any coach," coach Tim Miles said following a 65-55 loss to Creighton on Sunday.
Fairleigh Dickinson at St. John's 8:00 PM ET
Fresh off a victory at former Big East Conference rival Syracuse, St. John's kicks off a four-game homestand against Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday night. All but one of the Red Storm's victories have come by double digits and their only loss was at the hands of then-No. 8 Gonzaga in the title game of the NIT Season Tip-Off. St. John's is 11-0 against the Knights, but the schools haven't met since 2007.
Towson at Temple 8:00 PM ET
Through the early portion of the season, Temple has proven to be a much better team at home. The Owls take aim at a fifth win in as many home games this season when they host Towson on Wednesday. Temple is 1-3 in neutral-site and road games, although the win came Saturday in a 58-57 triumph over La Salle at the Palestra in Philadelphia.
Southern at Minnesota 8:00 PM ET
Minnesota’s backcourt is one of the best in the Big Ten and a big reason behind the Golden Gophers winning seven of their first nine contests. Minnesota hosts Southern on Wednesday looking for its fourth win in a row, and guards Andre Hollins, Carlos Morris and DeAndre Mathieu lead an attack averaging 86.7 points in the past three contests. “That was as good of a passing display as we’ve had since I’ve been here,” Minnesota coach Richard Pitino said after Monday’s 92-56 rout of North Dakota.
Utah at Brigham Young 9:00 PM ET
Utah will try to end a seven-game losing streak at BYU when the No. 14 Utes travel to Provo for the Deseret First Duel on Wednesday night. Utah is coming off its biggest win in 15 years, knocking off then-No. 10 Wichita State 69-68 in overtime last Wednesday. BYU is coming off a 20-point win against Hawaii in which Kyle Collinsworth recorded the Cougars’ first triple-double since 1988.
Fresno St. at Texas Tech 9:00 PM ET
After winning its last two games in the final minute, Texas Tech will aim for a less stressful finish Wednesday when the Red Raiders host Fresno State. Guard Devaugntah Williams scored with 2.2 seconds left to give Texas Tech a 46-44 win over Auburn last Wednesday, just three days after Robert Turner’s late free throw sealed a 63-62 win over Air Force. Williams averages a team-high 11.8 points for the Red Raiders, who rank last in the Big 12 in scoring at 66.5 points per game.
Colorado St. at Colorado 9:00 PM ET
Colorado is unbeaten at home while Colorado State hasn't lost at all but has yet to play a true road game. That will make for an interesting mix Wednesday night at the Coors Events Center as Colorado hosts the rival Rams. The Buffaloes are coming off a 64-57 loss Sunday at Georgia in which a seven-minute scoreless drought doomed them and dropped their road record to 0-2.
Wisconsin at Wis.-Milwaukee 9:00 PM ET
Sixth-ranked Wisconsin takes a bit of a break from its rugged early slate when it visits state rival Milwaukee on Wednesday night. The Badgers, whose lone loss came to second-ranked Duke, have already faced several non-conference powers including a win at rival Marquette last time out. Wisconsin may be without junior forward Sam Dekker, who continues to battle an ankle injury.
Northern Iowa at Denver 9:00 PM ET
Undefeated and in the top 25 for the first time since the end of the 2009-10 season, Northern Iowa certainly needs a win at Denver on Wednesday if it hopes to make its stay in the coaches' poll a long one. The 24th-ranked Panthers have only played one game this month - a 71-65 overtime triumph against George Mason on Saturday - as their suffocating defense was on display yet again.
Duquesne at Penn St. 9:00 PM ET
Penn State must be sharp on the defensive end to enhance its best start since 2000-01 as state rival Duquesne visits on Wednesday night. The Nittany Lions have won six consecutive games – their longest streak since 2007-08 when they won seven straight – and must deal with the best 3-point shooting team in the country. Duquesne is making a nation-best 45.8 percent of its attempts from behind the arc while Penn State is stingy, limiting opponents to 37.9 percent shooting overall.
Long Beach St. at San Diego St. 10:00 PM ET
No. 16 San Diego State is coming off the most inept offensive performance in the school’s Division I history and strives to improve on that showing when it hosts Long Beach State on Wednesday. The Aztecs put up brick after brick in a 49-36 loss to Washington on Sunday, an affair in which they shot 20.4 percent from the field while scoring the fewest points since becoming a major-college program in 1969. Long Beach State was routed 74-45 by Stephen F. Austin on Friday.
Wyoming at California 11:00 PM ET
California is off to its best start in seven years as it enters Wednesday’s home game against Wyoming. But that doesn’t mean it’s been all smooth sailing for Cuonzo Martin’s Golden Bears (7-1), who have had to scrap, rally and fight through some rough patches to win each of their last three games. The latest was Sunday’s 63-56 win at Nevada in which Cal overcame 25-percent shooting in the first half and a four-point Wolf Pack lead with six minutes remaining to finish the game on a 17-6 run.
UC Riverside at UCLA 11:00 PM ET
UCLA closes December with games against Gonzaga, Kentucky and Alabama, but first the Bruins need to be careful not to overlook visiting UC Riverside on Wednesday. The Highlanders have lost the three previous meetings against the Bruins, but they're riding a three-game winning streak after shooting 64.8 percent in Saturday's 88-62 victory over Portland State. Freshman forward Kevon Looney averages a Pac-12-best 11.3 rebounds for UCLA, which leads the league in scoring at 82 points per game.
Washington St. at Gonzaga 11:00 PM ET
Eighth-ranked Gonzaga attempts to bounce back from a high-profile overtime loss to Arizona when it faces a tough regional foe in Washington State on Wednesday at the Spokane Arena. The Bulldogs fell 66-63 to the Wildcats as they missed out on a victory that would have served notice that they expect to be a huge player during March Madness. Washington State played a lesser foe Saturday, rolling to a 91-71 win over Texas-San Antonio.
