Preview Roundups
November 27, 2014
Santa Clara at Tennessee 12:00 PM ET
Following its first win under new coach Donnie Tyndall, Tennessee hopes to go back to the future Thursday when it meets Santa Clara in the first round of the Orlando Classic. The Volunteers began their season with a disappointing 85-69 setback against VCU on Nov. 14, committing 19 turnovers and yielding 23 offensive rebounds. Tennessee turned the tables on Texas Southern six days later, recording only eight giveaways and collecting 20 offensive boards in a 70-58 triumph.
Butler at Oklahoma 1:00 PM ET
Butler looks to knock off a second ranked team in as many days when it takes on No. 21 Oklahoma on Thursday in the Battle 4 Atlantis semifinals at the Bahamas. The Bulldogs pounded No. 6 North Carolina on the boards to earn a 74-66 victory Wednesday despite cold shooting and must be sharper against the athletic Sooners, who beat UCLA by 10 in the first round. “I’ve said it from the beginning of the year,” Butler’s interim coach Chris Holtmann told reporters, “we have really tough guys.”
Kansas at Rhode Island 2:00 PM ET
Kansas showed it had plenty of work to do offensively following its most-lopsided defeat since 2000 before it got back on track in its last time out. The 12th-ranked Jayhawks hope to build upon their best game of the season Thursday when they face upset-minded Rhode Island in the first round of the Orlando Classic. Kansas managed only 40 points in a 32-point loss against Kentucky last week – its lowest offensive output since 1982 – on its way to scoring 109 points through its first two games.
Georgetown at Wisconsin 3:30 PM ET
Wisconsin did anything it wanted in its opening round win over UAB but Georgetown figures to present a greater challenge when they meet on Thursday in the semifinals of the Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas. In capturing their 21st consecutive regular-season non-conference game, the Badgers limited the Blazers to 35 percent shooting, and the defense is now yielding just 46.6 points per game this season.
San Diego at Xavier 4:30 PM ET
After opening the season with four dominant home wins, Xavier takes to the road Thursday for the start of the Wooden Legacy in Fullerton, Calif. The Musketeers will play three games in four days, beginning with their first-ever matchup against San Diego of the West Coast Conference. Freshman forward Trevon Bluiett is averaging a team-high 18.3 points while shooting 65 percent for Xavier, which is averaging 90 points and shooting 55.3 percent.
Illinois at Indiana St. 5:00 PM ET
Illinois is rolling with a new pair of shooters and hopes to make another big score when it meets Indiana State on Thursday in the first round of the Las Vegas Invitational at Orleans Arena. The Fighting Illini are the second-highest scoring team in the nation at 97.5 points per game behind BYU's 99, and are 16th in field goal percentage (51.7) and eighth in 3-pointers (47.3).
Rider at Michigan St 6:30 PM ET
Michigan State has been among the best defensive and rebounding teams in the country for some time, but the unselfishness of coach Tom Izzo’s current team might be pleasing him the most. The 19th-ranked Spartans look to continue their efficient ways Thursday when they face Rider in the first round of Orlando Classic. Michigan State recorded 22 assists on 29 field goals in Monday’s 79-52 win over Santa Clara and has registered an assist on 68.3 percent of its field goals thus far.
North Carolina at UCLA 7:00 PM ET
Sixth-ranked North Carolina will have plenty of things to improve on when it faces No. 23 UCLA on Thursday in the consolation round of the Battle 4 Atlantis at the Bahamas. The Tar Heels were pounded on the offensive boards 29-14, shot 56 percent at the free-throw line and turned the ball over 19 times in a 74-66 loss to Butler in Wednesday's first round. North Carolina must play much better in all aspects against a talented UCLA team, which dropped a 75-65 decision to Oklahoma on Wednesday.
Marquette at Georgia Tech 8:30 PM ET
Although Marquette has gotten off to a less-than-ideal start, the team’s recent success in regular-season tournaments may be reason for hope that a quick turnaround is near. The Golden Eagles look to climb above .500 Thursday when they square off with Georgia Tech in the first round of the Orlando Classic. After winning its season opener, Marquette fell 74-63 at Ohio State before it returned home to surrender 97 points in a loss to Omaha – the most points it has allowed in a game since 2009.
UAB at Florida 9:30 PM ET
Florida has a quick turnaround for its consolation matchup against UAB on Thursday in the Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas which is probably a good thing. The Gators suffered a crushing overtime loss to Georgetown in the first round, 66-65, when the Hoyas’ D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera made a jumper with 3.4 seconds left in overtime.
San Jose St. at Washington 11:00 PM ET
Washington’s interior defense was a primary concern heading into the season, but senior forward Shawn Kemp Jr. is showing why it might become one of the team’s strengths. Off to their first 3-0 start since 2011-12, the Huskies face San Jose State on Thursday at the Wooden Legacy in Fullerton, Calif. Kemp battled illness and was held to 4.4 points per game last season, but he’s averaging a team-high 15.7 points along with 5.7 rebounds through three games.
Washington St. at UC Santa Barbara 11:59 PM ET
Washington State travels to Anchorage for the Great Alaska Shootout, where it will open with UC Santa Barbara on Thursday night. The Cougars are coming off an 80-68 win over visiting Idaho State after opening the season with two road losses. Washington State has struggled to get in its shooting groove, making 37 percent of its shots from the floor, 29 percent from 3-point range and 62 percent from the free-throw line.
Baylor at Memphis 11:59 PM ET
Memphis takes a significant step up in competition when it plays Baylor on Thursday in the semifinals of the Las Vegas Invitational at Orleans Arena. The Tigers are coming off a much-needed 77-59 victory over perennial loser Prairie View A&M on Monday, restoring some confidence after opening their season with an exhibition loss and a 71-56 setback to No. 10 Wichita State.
