Preview Roundups
November 25, 2014
Fresno St. at East Carolina 12:00 PM ET
East Carolina must fight through injuries and sharpen its shooting touch when it faces Fresno State on Tuesday in the consolation round of the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla. The Pirates shot 31.9 percent and were pounded inside without 6-10 forward Marshall Guilmette (hip injury) in a 66-49 loss to Green Bay in Monday's first round. Fresno State also struggled offensively in the last two games, shooting less than 40 percent in both, including Monday’s 58-52 loss to Evansville.
Purdue at Missouri 2:00 PM ET
Missouri and Purdue will look to bounce back from sub-par performances when they meet Tuesday in a consolation game at the Maui Invitational. Missouri shot 36.4 percent from the floor and committed 17 turnovers in a 72-53 loss to No. 4 Arizona on Monday. Prior to that game, the Boilermakers shot 54.9 percent from the floor, but hurt themselves with eight of their 13 turnovers in the first nine minutes, helping them fall behind by 15 at the half and eventually lose to Kansas State 88-79.
Houston at Harvard 7:00 PM ET
Harvard head coach Tommy Amaker sent an early message to his key players, and apparently it was received loud and clear. With its talented core refocused, the Crimson continue a four-game stretch at home Tuesday night against Houston. Following a 24-turnover performance in a 58-57 loss to Holy Cross on Nov. 16 at TD Garden in Boston, Amaker benched his starters to begin the next affair before thrusting them back in five minutes in en route to a 71-49 victory over Florida Atlantic.
St. Peter's at Rutgers 7:00 PM ET
Rutgers looks to keep some early-season momentum going at home Tuesday when it hosts Saint Peter's in an on-campus game for the Barclays Classic. The Scarlet Knights edged St. Francis (NY) in their last game to climb above .500, and coach Eddie Jordan's squad wants to be playing at its best when it heads to Brooklyn for the elimination round of the tournament this weekend.
Hofstra at South Florida 7:00 PM ET
Despite coming off his first loss as USF coach, Orlando Antigua appears pleased with how his new team is rebounding from a 12-win campaign a season ago. The Bulls, who host Hofstra on Tuesday, showed a great deal of resolve on their just-completed two-game road trip, pulling out a two-point overtime win at UAB before falling by three versus North Carolina State on Sunday. “The resiliency that we’re showing, particularly this early this season, we’re happy with that,” Antigua said.
Pennsylvania at Temple 7:00 PM ET
With both Temple and Pennsylvania going through tough times on the court, a win in the Big 5 opener would allow the victor to forget about its struggles and provide bragging in the streets of Philadelphia. In a tradition that dates to 1955 and also includes city schools Villanova, LaSalle and Saint Joseph's, the Owls host the Quakers on Tuesday at Temple's Liacouras Center.
North Carolina Central at Cincinnati 7:00 PM ET
Cincinnati hardly looked like a gem in its opening game of the Emerald Coast Classic. The Bearscats will look to sharpen their game Tuesday night as the tournament hosts face off against North Carolina Central. Cincinnati found itself tied at the half before pulling away late and holding on for a 54-49 win over Eastern Illinois, while the Eagles weren't as successful in their Emerald Coast opener, dropping a 65-45 decision to Creighton.
Texas-Arlington at Kentucky 7:00 PM ET
Kentucky coach John Calipari had been looking for a consistent effort on both ends, so his team went out and blasted Montana State on Sunday. The young top-ranked Wildcats will try to make it six straight wins to start the season when they host Texas-Arlington on Tuesday. Kentucky held Montana State under 20 percent shooting and pushed the lead to 60 points late before settling for an 86-28 triumph.
Tennessee St. at Virginia 7:00 PM ET
Virginia looks to extend its home winning streak to 15 games when the seventh-ranked Cavaliers face Tennessee State for the first time Tuesday. The Cavaliers are 4-0 for the first time since winning their first five games of the 2007-08 season, and they've won each contest by at least 17 points. The game is part of the Barclays Center Classic, which the Cavaliers opened with a 67-39 win over Norfolk State on Nov. 16 while Tennessee State lost 78-46 at Vanderbilt in its tourney opener Sunday.
Citadel at Florida St. 7:00 PM ET
Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton is not overly concerned that his Seminoles are 1-3, but the status of leading scorer Aaron Thomas is cause for worry. The Seminoles return home to play The Citadel on Tuesday after losing twice in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic, falling 75-69 Sunday to Massachusetts as Thomas scored only two points before going to the hospital for dehydration. “It’s not the first time I’ve started 1-3,” Hamilton said.
Loyola-Maryland at Syracuse 7:00 PM ET
Syracuse looks to bounce back from a disappointing showing at the 2K Classic when it hosts Loyola Maryland on Tuesday. The Orange lost to California 73-59 in the semifinals and needed a key steal to fend off Iowa in the consolation game after letting a 15-point lead dwindle to one down the stretch. "We've got a lot of work to do in the next month in this non-conference part of our schedule," coach Jim Boeheim told reporters. "We just need time, but I hope it's not too much time."
Northern Iowa at Virginia Tech 7:00 PM ET
Virginia Tech is headed out of the cold and down to the Caribbean, and the Hokies are certainly hoping their rebounding warms up. Despite a 2-1 start, the Hokies have been outrebounded in each of their three contests, including a 42-27 disadvantage in Saturday’s 65-63 loss to Appalachian State. It’s most definitely a concern as they prepare to face undefeated Northern Iowa on Tuesday in the Cancun Challenge Riviera Division semifinals.
Arizona St. at Alabama 7:00 PM ET
Jonathan Gilling made 39.8 percent of his 3-point attempts during his first three years at Arizona State, but the Denmark native is hotter than a Sun Devil this season. The 6-8 senior tries to help Arizona State salvage a victory in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic when it meets Alabama in Tuesday's consolation game. Gilling scored 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting from 3-point range in Arizona State's 78-73 loss to Maryland on Monday after converting 7-of-13 in his first three contests this season.
Akron at Penn St. 7:30 PM ET
Having specialized in close games of late, Penn State shouldn't expect much of a breather when it faces visiting Akron on Tuesday. After opening the season with a pair of comfortable victories, the Nittany Lions played three straight nail-biters in the Charleston Classic, two of those wins against Cornell and USC decided by a total of three points and the other a double-overtime loss to Charlotte.
Arkansas at Southern Methodist 7:30 PM ET
SMU set an ambitious schedule to begin the season and came up short in road losses to Indiana and Gonzaga. The Mustangs got back on track with a victory over Eastern Washington and will attempt to put together back-to-back victories when they host Arkansas on Tuesday. The Razorbacks are showing off the explosive ability of their offense while averaging 93 points in three straight wins to begin the campaign.
Kansas St. at Arizona 7:30 PM ET
Kansas State and No. 4 Arizona took advantage of sloppy play by their opponents to win their opening-round games at the Maui Invitational and they’ll look to force turnovers again when they meet in Tuesday's semifinals. The Wildcats forced 17 turnovers and turned them into 24 points in their 72-53 victory Monday against Missouri. Kansas State forced 11 first-half turnovers in its opener against Purdue and turned those into 17 points in the 88-79 win.
VCU at Oregon 7:30 PM ET
VCU coach Shaka Smart hopes that his team learns from Monday's loss to Villanova — and quickly. One night after they were dismantled by the Wildcats, the 14th-ranked Rams hope to bounce back Tuesday against Oregon in the consolation game of the Legends Classic in Brooklyn. "I think we have the team certainly to be competitive in these types of games, but we're not where we need to be yet," Smart said after Monday's 77-53 defeat. "If anything, this is an eye-opener to remind us of that."
Nebraska Omaha at Nebraska 8:00 PM ET
Nebraska’s defense was a key ingredient to its run to the NCAA Tournament last season, but its inability to do the other things resulted in a surprising loss in its last time out. The Cornhuskers look to rebound from their first setback of the season on Tuesday when they host Omaha in the second Division I matchup between the two schools. Nebraska held 10 of its final 16 regular-season foes under 40 percent from the field in 2013-14, masking its own shooting and rebounding woes.
Southern at Tulane 8:00 PM ET
Tulane looks for its third straight victory when it hosts state rival Southern on Tuesday. It is the fourth of six straight home games to start the season for the Green Wave, who lost its season opener to Wake Forest but bounced back with wins over Mississippi Valley State and NAIA foe Southern-New Orleans last time out.
Northwestern St. at Texas Tech 8:00 PM ET
Texas Tech coach Tubby Smith wants to see a better defensive effort from his Red Raiders in Tuesday’s home contest against Northwestern State, and he made that crystal clear in the moments after Saturday's 80-68 victory over Missouri State. “I thought it was one of our worst defensive efforts,” Smith told reporters, adding, “We let them pass the ball up the court whenever they wanted.” The Red Raiders got a career-best 18 points from Devaugntah Williams and strong play from the bench.
Eastern Illinois at Creighton 8:00 PM ET
Yes, Creighton would love to have back former All-American Doug McDermott, but even though McDermott is plying his trade for the Chicago Bulls now, the Bluejays head into a Tuesday night game with Eastern Illinois still perfect on the season. Coach Greg McDermott is getting a balanced scoring attack — as opposed to last year's Doug McDermott-dominated offense — and the Bluejays have won four in a row, including an upset of nationally-ranked Oklahoma.
St. Francis (PA) at Texas 8:00 PM ET
With 100 percent of his minutes played back from a team that surprised people with 24 wins, Texas coach Rick Barnes was off the proverbial hot seat and expectations were once again high for the Longhorns heading into this campaign. No. 9 Texas has done nothing to disappoint thus far and hopes to continue its undefeated start when St. Francis (Pa.) rolls into town Tuesday.
Norfolk State at Vanderbilt 8:00 PM ET
Most teams would happily accept one of their top scoring options shooting better than 65 percent from the field. Vanderbilt is blessed with three such players as it prepares to host the Norfolk State in a Tuesday tuneup for the Barclays Center Classic. The Vanderbilt offense has been virtually unstoppable through three games, shooting a collective 51.6 percent from the floor and coming off a 78-46 rout of Tennessee State.
Air Force at Colorado 9:00 PM ET
If there had to be one bright spot to take out of Colorado's 56-33 loss in Wyoming on Saturday, it would be the highly anticipated collegiate debut of freshman guard Dominique Collier. The two-time Mr. Colorado Basketball award recipient out of Denver East High School hopes to build on his six-point performance and make a positive first impression on the home crowd when the Buffaloes host Air Force on Tuesday.
Miami-Florida at Charlotte 9:00 PM ET
Miami (Fla.) looks to remain unbeaten Tuesday when they visit Charlotte for the second meeting between the teams in three days. Miami shot 50 percent and rolled to a 77-58 victory over the 49ers on Sunday to capture the Charleston Classic title. Guards Sheldon McClellan and Manu Lecomte scored a combined 34 points for the Hurricanes, who won the tournament by defeating Drexel, Akron and Charlotte by an average of 22.3 points.
Northwestern at Miami (OH) 9:30 PM ET
Northwestern squeezed in four games over a nine-day stretch to open the season and has emerged unscathed. Still, the Wildcats have had to rally late in their last two outings to post narrow home wins over North Florida and Elon, and coach Chris Collins knows his team has ample room to improve entering Tuesday’s Cancun Challenge semifinal clash with Miami (Ohio) in Mexico.
Maryland at Iowa St. 9:30 PM ET
Maryland's Melo Trimble was named to the watch list of candidates for the Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award prior to the season, and the 6-2 freshman is proving to be a worthy choice. Trimble on Tuesday leads the Terrapins into the CBE Hall of Fame Classic championship game against No. 13 Iowa State after scoring 31 points — two shy of the school record for a freshman — in a 78-73 victory over Arizona State and joins senior Dez Wells to form a potent backcourt.
Villanova at Michigan 10:00 PM ET
Villanova faced a tough test Monday and passed with flying colors. The 11th-ranked Wildcats will look to ace back-to-back exams when they face No. 18 Michigan on Tuesday in the title game of the Legends Classic in Brooklyn. Facing a VCU team that entered with the ninth-highest scoring average in the nation. Villanova limited the Rams to 23 second-half points and 2-of-17 3-point shooting for the game in a convincing 77-53 victory in Monday's first semifinal.
Pittsburgh at San Diego St. 10:00 PM ET
San Diego State will need to find its legs when the No. 15 Aztecs face off against Pittsburgh in a Maui Invitational semifinal game Tuesday. San Diego State survived two overtimes to get past BYU in their tournament opener Monday night and must take on a Pittsburgh team that owned a 51-17 rebounding edge in its victory earlier Monday against Chaminade. Putting a body on the Panthers’ 6-9 forwards, Michael Young and Derrick Randall, will be key for the Aztecs.
Delaware at Stanford 11:00 PM ET
Three days after losing to one of the top teams in the country, Stanford returns home Tuesday to face a Delaware team picked to finish eighth in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Cardinal concluded an encouraging run in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Saturday with a 70-59 loss to Duke and freshman phenom Jahlil Okafor. Chasson Randle scored a team-high 22 points for Stanford, which opened the tournament with a dominant 89-60 win over UNLV.
Cal St. Fullerton at Southern California 11:00 PM ET
USC continues its extremely busy slate to open the season when it hosts Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday. The Trojans limped home after going 1-2 in the Charleston Classic over the weekend. USC edged Drexel on Friday but blew a late lead and fell to Penn State on Sunday.
