Robert Morris at Georgetown 12:00 PM ET
Picked second in the Big East preseason poll and boasting its preseason player of the year, things look promising for Georgetown. The Hoyas are off to a 2-0 start as they prepare to host Robert Morris on Saturday. Georgetown hasn't even needed much from its star D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera rolling to successive victories to start the season.
Notre Dame at Massachusetts 12:00 PM ET
After three confidence-building victories, Notre Dame will face its first real test of the season Saturday against Massachusetts in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. With an average margin of victory of 39.6 points against Binghamton, Navy and Coppin State, coach Mike Brey is curious how his team will perform with the step up in competition. "I think this is great for us this weekend because it's going to be a really hard challenge for us," Brey told the media.
Appalachian St. at Virginia Tech 1:00 PM ET
Virginia Tech is opening the season with a flourish, especially on the defensive end. The Hokies hope to make it a 3-0 start when they host Appalachian State on Saturday. Virginia Tech is one of the most efficient offensive teams in the country in the early going, shooting 56.3 percent, and is keeping the pressure up on the defensive end while holding its first two opponents to an average of 54.5 points.
Utah St. at Mississippi St. 1:00 PM ET
For the first time in coach Rick Ray’s three seasons at Mississippi State, the Bulldogs have an experienced contingent, with five starters and seven lettermen back from last season. On the flip side, Mississippi State has an ugly 42-26 turnover-to-assist ratio so far, and that’s a definite concern heading into Saturday’s home contest against undefeated Utah State.
North Carolina at Davidson 2:00 PM ET
Before a trip to the Bahamas for three games in three days, No. 6 North Carolina has a more standard road test Saturday, traveling a couple of hours to face long-time foe Davidson on in Charlotte, N.C. The Tar Heels will be one of eight teams playing in the Battle 4 Atlantis starting Wednesday in the Bahamas, where they face Butler and then two other yet-to-be-determined opponents. The on-campus portion of the event saw North Carolina roll past Robert Morris by a 103-59 margin on Sunday.
Nebraska Omaha at Marquette 2:30 PM ET
First-year Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski will be looking for a sharper defensive performance when his Golden Eagles host Omaha on Saturday. Marquette allowed 65.3 percent shooting versus No. 20 Ohio State on Tuesday in a 74-63 loss and must be alert against the Mavericks, who scored 100 in their opener. “I think we can give a better sustained effort for 40 minutes,” Wojciechowski told reporters. “In order to beat a team of the quality of Ohio State, you have to grind it out.”
Florida St. at Providence 2:30 PM ET
After a poor defensive effort in a loss to one New England team, Florida State will need to regroup if it wants to avoid the same fate against two others beginning Saturday against Providence in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. Playing at home, the Seminoles allowed Northeastern to shoot 54 percent and score 27 points from beyond the arc in a 76-73 defeat that left coach Leonard Hamilton less than pleased.
Clemson at Nevada 2:30 PM ET
Perhaps it’s a good thing Clemson doesn’t have time to lament its shocking loss to Gardner-Webb with a tough Nevada team on tap Saturday in the consolation bracket of the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Island. In the 72-70 loss to the Runnin’ Bulldogs, Donte Grantham called a time out when the Tigers didn’t have any left and Clemson was issued a technical foul.
Elon University at Northwestern 4:00 PM ET
Northwestern edged North Florida 69-67 in the first round of the Cancun Challenge on Thursday night behind Tre Demps' go-ahead jumper with 2.5 seconds left, but before the Wildcats head to Mexico next week, they'll host one more game against Elon on Saturday as part of the eight-team tournament. Demps has had a huge impact coming off the bench for Northwestern in the past three games, but things went especially well on Thursday as he notched a career-high 15 points against the Ospreys.
Loyola-Maryland at Butler 5:00 PM ET
Butler aims for its 16th straight non-conference win at home when it faces Loyola Maryland for the first time Saturday. The Bulldogs have notched lopsided victories over Maine and Chattanooga to start the season and have one more tuneup before a challenging trip to the Bahamas for the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. The Greyhounds have won two straight since a season-opening loss at Texas Tech.
Louisiana State at Weber St. 5:00 PM ET
As LSU prepares for its Paradise Jam consolation matchup Saturday against Weber State the Tigers might want to find a way to keep their frontline out of foul trouble. In LSU’s first-round game against Old Dominion, the Tigers jumped out to a 15-5 lead but once Jarell Martin, Jordan Mickey and Elbert Robinson III went to the bench with two fouls apiece, Old Dominion took advantage and went on to capture a 70-61 victory.
Colorado at Wyoming 6:00 PM ET
Colorado won its first two games by running sea-level teams out of its gym, but it won't have altitude on its side when it travels to Wyoming on Saturday. It will be an uphill battle for the Buffaloes, who play their home games at 5,345 feet but meet the Cowboys at their Arena-Auditorium, which sits at 7,220 feet — the highest Division I venue in the nation. Colorado snapped a six-game losing streak to Wyoming with a 63-58 victory last season, but has lost three straight in Laramie.
Nebraska at Rhode Island 7:00 PM ET
Proud to be back in the rankings and planning for bigger things down the road this season, No. 21 Nebraska has taken a businesslike approach to the early going. A pair of similar wins over inferior opponents has given coach Tim Miles a decent sample size and plenty of film of his club, its strengths and weaknesses. But Northern Kentucky and Central Arkansas will only get you so far, and Miles knows his crew has a bigger challenge on tap in its first road game Saturday at Rhode Island.
Eastern Washington at Southern Methodist 7:00 PM ET
SMU coach Larry Brown said Thursday that he was "sick to his stomach" after the 23rd-ranked Mustangs lost for the second time in their first three games this season. "I'm looking at this as an opportunity for other people to step up," said Brown, whose team has been hampered by Markus Kennedy's ineligibily and Emmanuel Mudiay's decision to leave the program. Brown hopes his team takes a step in the right direction Saturday when Eastern Washington comes to town.
UNLV at Temple 7:00 PM ET
Both Temple and UNLV struggled in the early moments of their semifinal matchups in the Coaches vs. Cancer semifinals, and that is a big reason why the Owls and Running Rebels find themselves matched up in Saturday’s tournament consolation game in Brooklyn, N.Y. Temple fell behind 9-2 to third-ranked Duke and never got closer than five points the rest of the way in a 74-54 loss. The Running Rebels never recovered from allowing the first 12 points of an 89-60 semifinal defeat to Stanford.
Morgan St. at Houston 8:00 PM ET
After winning his debut as Houston’s head coach, Kelvin Sampson figures to receive a warm reception Saturday when the Cougars play their home opener against Morgan State. Sampson, a two-time national coach of the year, began the season with a 77-74 win at Murray State on Nov. 14. Forward Devonta Pollard scored 19 points and guard Jherrod Stiggers added 17 for Houston, which was picked to finish seventh in the American Athletic Conference preseason poll after going 17-16 last season.
Southern-New Orleans at Tulane 8:00 PM ET
As Tulane begins its first season as a member of the American Athletic Conference, coach Ed Conroy tries to remain patient with a team that was picked to finish last in the preseason poll. "This is a process," Conroy told nola.com. "We have to show consistency in our play, and if we can do that, the numbers will come out the way we need them, too.'' The Green Wave take their next step toward that goal when they host NAIA member Southern-New Orleans on Saturday in the Tulane Classic.
Lamar at Indiana 8:00 PM ET
Indiana is far from a perfect team, but there is one area where the Hoosiers are certainly not lacking - confidence. Two nights after 57 percent of their shots came from behind the arc, the Hoosiers will look to continue their solid start to the season when they host Lamar on Saturday. "We have such great shooters that, when it wasn't falling for us, none of our heads went down," junior guard Yogi Ferrell said after Thursday's 74-68 win over No. 23 SMU.
Missouri St. at Texas Tech 8:00 PM ET
Texas Tech will attempt to rebound from an overtime loss at LSU when it hosts Missouri State on Saturday. The Red Raiders couldn’t make a 36-24 halftime lead hold up against LSU and then shot 1-of-5 in the extra session. The Red Raiders are starting three freshmen, a sophomore and a senior with freshman forward Norense Odiase leading the team with 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game.
MD Baltimore Cty at Minnesota 8:30 PM ET
There were smiles aplenty on Thursday night in Minneapolis, when Minnesota forgot about glamour coaching matchups and difficult early-season opponents, and just went out and throttled a team. Indeed, a 109-57 win over Franklin Pierce, a Division II opponent from New Hampshire, won’t get the Gophers very far later on down the road, but a win is a win, and coach Richard Pitino has a little more to go on now as he prepares to face off with UMBC on Saturday in the NIT Season Tip-Off.
St. Thomas Aquinas at Gonzaga 9:00 PM ET
No. 11 Gonzaga trounced St. Joseph's 94-42 on Wednesday night in the first of two home games scheduled for the NIT Season Tip-Off. The 52-point routing was the largest margin of victory witnessed at the McCarthey Athletic Center — a feat the Bulldogs hope to top when they face Division II combatant St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday. The Spartans were selected to compete in the tournament after winning 15 games last season under first-year head coach Tobin Anderson.
Duke at Stanford 9:30 PM ET
Johnny Dawkins will stroll the sidelines for Stanford in Saturday’s championship game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Brooklyn, N.Y., but he will not have to look far to see his coaching mentor. Dawkins’ squad takes on third-ranked Duke in the tournament title game, pitting Dawkins for the first time against Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski, for whom Dawkins starred in the mid-1980s and later served as an assistant for 11 seasons. Duke has won all four of its games by double digits.
Boise St. at Wisconsin 10:00 PM ET
Fourth-ranked Wisconsin is displaying a deep squad and the Badgers look for their fourth straight win when they host Boise State on Saturday. Wisconsin has won its first three games by an average of 33 points and sophomore forward Nigel Hayes is stepping up as a potent force to join senior forward Frank Kaminsky and junior forward Sam Dekker. “We have a lot of weapons on this team,” Kaminsky told reporters. “It’s a pretty deep team.”
