Preview Roundups
November 18, 2014
Baylor at South Carolina 12:00 PM ET
Baylor looked a lot like the teams that rolled up 79 victories combined over the previous three seasons in its 2014-15 opener while posting a 41-point win. The Bears will get more of an indication of how good they are Tuesday when they attempt to start 2-0 for the ninth straight season with a road test against South Carolina as part of the College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon. Baylor edged the Gamecocks 66-64 at home last season and is without three of its top four scorers from the 2013-14 squad.
Wichita St. at Memphis 2:00 PM ET
Teams that lost in the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament last March square off on a neutral court Tuesday afternoon when Memphis faces Wichita State at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. It is the season opener for the Tigers, who return one starter from a 24-10 squad that lost to Virginia 78-60 in the NCAA Tournament. Memphis created shock waves when it fell in overtime 74-70 to Division II school Christian Brothers University in its lone exhibition game.
Utah at San Diego St. 4:00 PM ET
Two former conference foes square off in the Tip-Off Marathon on Tuesday when Utah visits No. 16 San Diego State. The Utes and Aztecs were opponents in both the Western Athletic and Mountain West conferences before Utah departed for the Pac-12 in 2011. San Diego State defeated Cal State Northridge 79-58 in its opener on Friday, while Utah posted a 90-72 victory over Ball State on the same night.
Toledo at VCU 6:00 PM ET
No. 15 VCU looks to continue its winning ways when it hosts Toledo in the opening round of the Progressive Legends Classic on Tuesday. The Rams won their ninth consecutive season opener with an 85-69 triumph against Tennessee and turn their attention to extending their home winning streak to 21 games. "I'm glad they were able to get this game under their belts," coach Shaka Smart told reporters. "The first game there's typically some jitters and some things go funky."
Northeastern at Florida St. 7:00 PM ET
Florida State was sparked by some of its younger players in a season-opening victory and will go after another when it hosts Northeastern on Tuesday in the second round of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic. The Seminoles fell behind Manhattan Saturday before coach Leonard Hamilton turned to a trio of underclassmen, including Robbie Berwick, Dayshawn Watkins and Jarquez Smith, to improve to 12-1 in season openers.
Alabama A&M at Georgia Tech 7:00 PM ET
Quinton Stephens took advantage of injuries to contribute as a freshman last season, and the Georgia Tech forward made a statement by hitting six 3-pointers and scoring a career-high 22 points in the Yellow Jackets’ season opener Friday. Stephens and the Yellow Jackets, coming off an 80-73 victory over rival Georgia, host Alabama A&M on Tuesday. “We got some good basketball from a lot of different guys,” Georgia Tech coach Brian Gregory told reporters.
Stony Brook at Georgia 7:00 PM ET
Beginning the season with a rivalry game did not work out so well for Georgia, which will attempt to even its record when it hosts Stony Brook on Tuesday as part of the NIT Season Tip-Off. The Bulldogs had some trouble defending the 3-point line in an 80-73 loss at Georgia Tech on Friday but get a chance to ease into the regular season with the next three games at home. The Seawolves pulled out a tight victory in their opener and will not challenge Georgia much on the perimeter.
Long Beach St. at Xavier 7:00 PM ET
Xavier has made a habit of defending home court and looks to maintain that trend when it continues a season-opening four-game homestand against Long Beach State on Tuesday. The Musketeers, who went 15-2 at the Cintas Center last season, are 189-27 all-time at the arena after a 93-60 rout of Northern Arizona in the season opener Friday. That victory extended Xavier's winning streak in openers to 25 in a row, including 24 straight at home.
Texas A&M CC at Georgetown 7:00 PM ET
Georgetown’s highly-regarded recruiting class wasted little time delivering on its promise in its season-opening win. The Hoyas, who host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday, welcomed five freshmen to the program after last season’s 18-15 campaign and four of them combined to score 42 points in Saturday’s 83-62 win over St. Francis (N.Y.). The most impressive performance from the newcomers – ranked as high as fourth nationally by some recruiting services – was a 23-point effort from L.J. Peak.
South Carolina State at Virginia 7:00 PM ET
Virginia has done little to diminish the highest expectations attached to it since Ralph Sampson patrolled the paint more than 30 years ago and is expected to have little trouble when it hosts South Carolina State on Tuesday. The ninth-ranked Cavaliers won each of their first two games by 28 points, and appear to be at least as strong as last season when they won the ACC regular-season and tournament titles, and entered the NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed before bowing out in the Sweet 16.
Michigan St at Duke 7:00 PM ET
Michigan State coach Tom Izzo has opted to downplay expectations with his 18th-ranked Spartans set to face No. 3 Duke in Indianapolis on Tuesday night, and considering how the Blue Devils have looked this season, that might be a wise strategy. "I'd say Duke, right now, is probably the best team," said Izzo, adding, "I'm looking forward to it because if we play like we did (in our opener), we'll get embarrassed, and that's sometimes a good thing. But I don't think that's going to happen."
Marquette at Ohio St. 7:30 PM ET
No. 20 Ohio State faces its first big test of the season when it welcomes Marquette to Value City Arena on Tuesday. The Buckeyes hardly broke a sweat in the 92-55 win over UMass Lowell in their opener and look to win their 53rd consecutive game against an unranked non-conference opponent. "We've got a good group of guys who can fill it up any night," freshman guard D'Angelo Russell told reporters. "It's just about stepping up and getting the job done."
Central Arkansas at Nebraska 8:00 PM ET
After collecting preseason honors for weeks, Nebraska wing Terran Petteway lived up to the hype in Sunday’s season-opening win over Northern Kentucky. Petteway, who averaged a Big Ten-best 18.1 points last season, registered a game-high 25 points, including six 3-pointers, as the 21st-ranked Cornhuskers cruised to an 80-61 victory. The 6-6 junior figures to fill the box score again on Tuesday when the Huskers host Central Arkansas.
NW Oklahoma State at Oklahoma St. 8:00 PM ET
If the 6,125 in attendance - more than 3,000 fewer than last season - for the opener last Friday is any indication, Oklahoma State fans don't have high hopes for this group of Cowboys. Coach Travis Ford lost two standouts to the NBA, but the Cowboys still have Le'Bryan Nash and Phil Forte III. With a little extra motivation after a subpar effort Sunday, Oklahoma State should have no problem collecting its third win in five days when Division II member Northwestern Oklahoma State visits Tuesday.
Western Kentucky at Minnesota 8:00 PM ET
Minnesota is back home and coach Richard Pitino can focus on an opponent without the distraction of bloodlines. The Golden Gophers host Western Kentucky on Tuesday in the NIT Season Tip-Off, four days after Pitino’s squad fell 81-68 to No. 9 Louisville – coached by Richard’s father, Rick Pitino – in the Armed Forces Classic in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Minnesota got its usual steady performance from guard Andre Hollins, but the Gophers were 4-for-18 from 3-point range.
Drake at DePaul 9:00 PM ET
DePaul’s inability to maintain a sizeable lead in its season-opening win did nothing to dispel the notion that 2014-15 won’t be just another in a series of long years for the Blue Demons. Fresh off its one-point victory over the weekend, DePaul hopes to put together a more complete game on Tuesday when it hosts Drake. The Blue Demons, who have finished last in the Big East in each of the last six years, led UIC by as many as 21 points in the first half Friday before crumbling thereafter.
Chattanooga at Butler 9:00 PM ET
Butler will have a tough time improving its shooting percentage from its season opener when the Bulldogs host Chattanooga on Tuesday night. Butler shot a school-record 71.9 percent from the floor in the 99-57 win against Maine on Friday night. The Bulldogs benefited from a plethora of high-percentage shots as nearly two-thirds of their attempts were taken within five feet of the basket and Butler made 88 percent of those.
Kansas at Kentucky 9:00 PM ET
When No. 1 Kentucky and No. 5 Kansas square off Tuesday at the Champions Classic in Indianapolis, the matchup will feature a terrific mix of college basketball's past, present and future. The past involves the two winningest teams in the sport's history with 4,269 victories and 30 Final Fours between them — including a meeting in the 2012 national championship game, won by Kentucky.
Texas Tech at Louisiana State 9:30 PM ET
LSU boasts one of the top frontcourts in the country in sophomores Jordan Mickey and Jarell Martin, but the Tigers struggled early in Friday’s season opener before securing a 93-82 victory over Gardner-Webb. The Tigers will aim for a more complete effort Tuesday when they host Texas Tech, which opened with Friday’s 71-59 win against Loyola Maryland. Mickey and Martin scored 21 points apiece in the Tigers’ opener, while junior guard Keith Hornsby had 17 points in his LSU debut.
Corban College at Oregon St. 10:00 PM ET
A week after dropping an exhibition game to a Division II foe, Oregon State got the regular season and the Wayne Tinkle era off on a fine note when the Beavers held off Rice on opening night. Things should be a bit easier Tuesday when Oregon State hosts NAIA member Corban. Oregon State is looking to replace the bulk of its offense from last season as Langston Morris-Walker is the top returning scorer after averaging four points per game last year.game.
