Preview Roundups
March 23, 2014
Illinois at Clemson 11:00 AM ET
Despite being the No. 2 seed in its eight-team region, Illinois returns to the road for its second round NIT game on Sunday morning at Clemson. The Illini, who came back from a 30-13 deficit to pull out a 66-62 win at Boston University in the first round, would normally host the No. 3 seeded Tigers, but the school's home arena, the State Farm Center, is undergoing renovations. That's a big plus for Clemson, which has won 10 straight NIT home games dating back to 1982.
Stanford at Kansas 12:15 PM ET
Kansas surely didn’t miss injured center Joel Embiid (back) in its NCAA tournament opener. The Jayhawks will hope reinforcements Jamari Traylor and Tarik Black have another productive game when second-seeded Kansas faces No. 10 seed Stanford in Sunday’s round of 32 in St. Louis. Traylor came off the bench to post career highs of 17 points and 14 rebounds and fill-in starter Black added 12 points and four blocks in Friday’s Midwest regional 80-69 victory over Eastern Kentucky.
Kentucky at Wichita St. 2:45 PM ET
Top-seeded Wichita State puts its undefeated record on the line when it meets arguably its toughest opponent of the season - eighth-seeded Kentucky - on Sunday in the third round of the NCAA tournament in St. Louis. The Shockers defeated Cal Poly 64-37 on Friday while the Wildcats earned a hard-fought 56-49 decision over Kansas State. "It's been a great season thus far, 35-0 is awesome," Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall told reporters. "Our goal is to get out of the weekend."
St. Mary's at Minnesota 3:00 PM ET
Minnesota looks to advance to the quarterfinals of the NIT when it hosts Saint Mary's on Sunday. The top-ranked Golden Gophers shook off the disappointment of missing the NCAA tournament with an 88-81 win over High Point, but lost guard DeAndre Mathieu to a lower-body injury in the second half. "You find out who wants to keep playing and who doesn't," coach Richard Pitino told reporters. "We did a lot of good things. We've got to get DeAndre healthy and ready to go by Sunday."
Southern Miss at Missouri 5:00 PM ET
Missouri hosts third-seeded Southern Mississippi on Sunday in the second round of the NIT after the second-seeded Tigers used a late-game rally to knock off Davidson - and some of the disappointment of not making the NCAA tournament - last week. "(We're) one step closer to get to New York, and there's no question I think guys get more and more excited about that," Tigers coach Frank Haith said. Missouri is 2-7 at the NIT while the Golden Eagles are 9-8 in 10 appearances, winning the 1987 title.
North Carolina at Iowa St. 5:15 PM ET
Two major-conference schools that were able to avoid the upset bug face off in the third round of the East Regional in San Antonio Sunday when third-seeded Iowa State takes on sixth-seeded North Carolina for a spot in the NCAA tournament's Sweet 16. The Tar Heels were able to survive a close call against Providence thanks in part to an inside presence that saw them grab 21 of their 40 rebounds off the offensive glass.
Mercer at Tennessee 6:10 PM ET
Mercer looks to match the route last year’s Atlantic Sun champion took all the way to the Sweet 16 when it faces Tennessee in the third round of the NCAA tournament Sunday at Raleigh, N.C. The 14th-seeded Bears shocked Duke 78-71 on Friday and must contain a physical Tennessee front line along with talented guard Jordan McRae to advance in the Midwest regional. The 11th-seeded Volunteers can reach the regional semifinals for the fourth time in eight years with their third win in six days.
Stephen F. Austin at UCLA 7:10 PM ET
UCLA figures to have a large contingent of fans in San Diego for Sunday’s NCAA tournament third-round game, but the Bruins’ next opponent is quickly rising in popularity. No. 12 seed Stephen F. Austin became an instant fan favorite after rallying for a 77-75 overtime win over Virginia Commonwealth on Friday, with Desmond Haymon’s four-point play with 3.6 seconds left in regulation serving as the day’s best highlight.
Baylor at Creighton 7:40 PM ET
Baylor relied heavily on its ability from the free throw line and a strong zone defense to advance to the third round in the NCAA tournament. That defense will need to be on its game again Sunday, when the sixth-seeded Bears take on Doug McDermott and No. 3 seed Creighton in West regional play. McDermott put up 30 points and 12 rebounds in the second-round win over Louisiana-Lafayette and has scored at least 27 in five straight games.
Memphis at Virginia 8:40 PM ET
Memphis’ Michael Dixon Jr. broke out of a scoring slump at just the right time, scoring 19 points – including the Tigers’ final seven points – as Memphis edged George Washington 71-66 in the second round of the NCAA tournament Friday. The Tigers’ next opponent will present a tremendous challenge to Memphis’ offense as Virginia brings the nation’s stingiest scoring defense into Sunday’s East regional third-round matchup in Raleigh, N.C.
Gonzaga at Arizona 9:40 PM ET
Arizona was not at its best in Friday's NCAA tournament opener, but coach Sean Miller hopes that the nerves are a thing of the past come Sunday. The top-seeded Wildcats - a group that Miller admitted seemed nervous at times Friday - take on eighth-seeded Gonzaga in San Diego in a third-round matchup in the West regional. "We are fortunate to advance and I know the next game will be a terrific game," Miller said after his team outlasted pesky Weber State 68-59.
