Preview Roundups
March 21, 2014
Mercer at Duke 12:15 PM ET
Duke begins its quest for a fifth NCAA tournament title Friday when it meets Mercer in the Midwest Regional in Raleigh, N.C. While the third-seeded Blue Devils aren't expected to have trouble with the 14th-seeded and Atlantic Sun Conference champion Bears, they landed in what appears the toughest region in the tournament. Undefeated Wichita State and Michigan own the top two seeds while Louisville, the defending NCAA tournament champion, is a surprising fourth seed.
Nebraska at Baylor 12:40 PM ET
Nebraska and Baylor, two former Big 12 rivals, will meet in the second round of the NCAA tournament in the West Regional in San Antonio, Texas, on Friday. The 11th-seeded Cornhuskers, who left the Big 12 after the 2010-11 season, make their first appearance in the tournament since 1998 and first as a member of the Big Ten. The sixth-seeded Bears have made two appearances in the last four years with the most recent coming in 2012, when they were bounced by Kentucky in the South Regional final.
Stanford at New Mexico 1:40 PM ET
Stanford returns to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008 as the 10th-seeded Cardinal face No. 7 seed New Mexico in Friday's South Regional in St. Louis. The Lobos enter as one of the hottest teams in the country after capturing their third straight Mountain West tournament title with a 64-58 win over San Diego State on Saturday. New Mexico won nine of its last 10 games while Stanford dropped four of its last seven, including an 84-59 loss to UCLA in the Pac-12 tournament semifinals.
Weber St. at Arizona 2:10 PM ET
Arizona is one of the top-seeded teams in the NCAA tournament for the first time in 11 years - and will celebrate its No. 1 standing Friday against No. 16 Weber State in its opener at the West Region in San Diego. Arizona bobbled a bit after a school-record 21-0 start, going 7-3 down the stretch before losing to UCLA in the Pac-12 tournament final. Those speed bumps coincided with a season-ending foot injury to starting forward and third-leading scorer Brandon Ashley.
Tennessee at Massachusetts 2:45 PM ET
Massachusetts looks to find its best form after stumbling a bit down the stretch when it faces Tennessee in the second round of the NCAA tournament Friday in Raleigh, N.C. The sixth-seeded Minutemen started the season 16-1, but have dropped three of the last five games coming into the Midwest Regional for their first appearance in the NCAAs since 1998. Tennessee, the 11th seed, has won six of its last seven games after rallying for a 78-65 overtime first-round victory over Iowa on Wednesday.
Louisiana-Lafayette at Creighton 3:10 PM ET
Despite falling just short of the Big East regular-season and tournament titles, Creighton drew a No. 3 seed - its highest ever - and a matchup with Louisiana-Lafayette in the West bracket Friday in San Antonio. The Ragin' Cajuns upset Georgia State 82-81 in OT in the Sun Belt Conference title game Sunday to claim their first NCAA tournament berth since 2005. A potential in-state showdown could be on tap Sunday if the Bluejays advance; the winner gets Baylor or Nebraska in the round of 32.
Eastern Kentucky at Kansas 4:10 PM ET
No. 2 Kansas might not need freshman Joel Embiid during its NCAA tournament second-round game against No. 15 Eastern Kentucky on Friday in St. Louis. The Jayhawks' top rebounder hasn't played since March 1 because of back issues but their first opponent - a Colonels team making its first NCAA appearance since 2007 - is ranked at the bottom nationally in rebounding. The winner between these high-scoring teams - both average nearly 80 points - plays No. 7 New Mexico or No. 10 Stanford.
Oklahoma St. at Gonzaga 4:40 PM ET
Few marquee teams dealt with bigger distractions this season than Oklahoma State, which will look to put a disappointing conference mark behind it against Gonzaga on Friday in the second round of the NCAA tournament in San Diego. The ninth-seeded Cowboys watched star guard Marcus Smart go from potential top-five NBA draftee to perceived head case in a matter of months. Bouncing back with a strong tournament run won't be easy, starting with their matchup against the No. 8 Bulldogs.
George Washington at Memphis 6:55 PM ET
Despite a disappointing showing in the American Athletic Conference tournament, Memphis drew the East Region's eight seed and an opening NCAA tournament matchup with ninth-seeded George Washington on Friday in Raleigh, N.C. The Tigers are headed to the Big Dance for the fourth straight season under coach Josh Pastner, who predicted his team to be as high as a six seed prior to the selection announcement. "I think the committee is going to weigh our conference strength very highly," Pastner said.
Cal Poly SLO at Wichita St. 7:10 PM ET
Top-seeded Wichita State begins its quest for a return trip to the Final Four when it takes on 16th-seeded Cal Poly in the second round of the NCAA tournament Friday in St. Louis. The Shockers are the first team since UNLV in 1991 to enter the tournament unbeaten and look to make their 11th appearance overall a special one, starting in the difficult Midwest Regional. Cal Poly shot a season-high 56.9 percent to beat Texas Southern 81-69 in Wednesday's first round.
Providence at North Carolina 7:20 PM ET
The Tar Heels have turned their season around once this year and they’ll try it again Friday when they open the NCAA tournament as the sixth-seeded team in the East Region, taking on No. 11 Providence Friday in San Antonio. North Carolina won 12 straight following a 1-4 start to ACC play but missed a chance to finish in sole possession of third place by losing the regular-season finale to Duke and then dropping the ACC tournament opener to Pittsburgh.
Stephen F. Austin at VCU 7:27 PM ET
Virginia Commonwealth will enter the NCAA tournament as the South Region's fifth seed, taking on a 12 seed in Stephen F. Austin on a 28-game winning streak Friday in San Diego. VCU was unable to capture an Atlantic 10 championship Sunday, losing to Saint Joseph's 65-61 to snap a streak of six straight wins. The Rams shot 5-of-19 from behind the arc against the Hawks, and coach Shaka Smart saw that as a key factor, telling reporters, "We didn't put enough of them away and we had good looks."
Coastal Carolina at Virginia 9:25 PM ET
Virginia is proving defense does win championships and the top-seeded Cavaliers hope to ride that mantra to a national title when they open NCAA tournament play against No. 16 seed Coastal Carolina on Friday in the East Regional at Raleigh, N.C. The Cavaliers locked up their No. 1 seed by dispatching Duke 62-53 in Sunday's ACC tournament title game - the school's first conference postseason championship since 1976. Virginia enters the tournament having won 16 of its last 17 games.
Kansas St. at Kentucky 9:40 PM ET
After missing out a season ago, No. 8 seed Kentucky is back in the NCAA tournament, where they will take on No. 9 Kansas State on Friday in the Midwest Regional in St. Louis. The Wildcats, who captured the national title in 2012 under John Calipari, erased a 16-point deficit against the tournament's overall No.1 seed Florida in Sunday's SEC championship game only to squander its chance to win on the final shot in a 61-60 loss.
North Carolina Central at Iowa St. 9:50 PM ET
Iowa State carries loads of momentum into its third straight NCAA tournament appearance, which begins with a matchup against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champ North Carolina Central in the second round of the East Region on Friday in San Antonio. The Cyclones earned a No. 3 seed - their highest since 2001 - by rolling to a Big 12 tournament crown, capped by Saturday's 74-65 win over Baylor. Iowa State has won 11 of its last 14 overall, including seven victories over tournament teams.
Tulsa at UCLA 9:57 PM ET
Two playing legends of NCAA tournaments past, Steve Alford and Danny Manning, will look to make more memories when the teams they coach, No. 4 seed UCLA and No. 13 seed Tulsa, respectively, match up in a South Regional second-round contest in San Diego on Friday. Both teams like to put points on the board, with the Bruins averaging 81.8 points and the Golden Hurricane at 73.1. The duo of Jordan Adams (17.2 ppg) and Kyle Anderson (14.9 ppg, 8.8 rpg) powers UCLA.
