Preview Roundups
March 20, 2015
New Mexico St. at Kansas 12:15 PM ET
After losing the Big 12 title game, Kansas looks to regroup as the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Region with a second-round matchup against No. 15 seed New Mexico State on Friday in Omaha, Neb. The Jayhawks, who have made 26 straight appearances, fell 70-66 to Iowa State on Saturday, which killed their chances at a No. 1 seed and may have factored in their tough road to the Final Four. Kansas could meet Wichita State in the third round and undefeated Kentucky looms as the region's top seed.
Georgia at Michigan St 12:40 PM ET
As Michigan State prepares for its 18th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the Spartans must shake off a disappointing finish to the Big Ten tournament title game. Michigan State led by 11 against Wisconsin on Sunday before the Badgers closed regulation with a 23-12 run and then blanked the Spartans 11-0 in the extra session. Despite the loss, Tom Izzo's crew earned a No. 7 seed in the East Region and will face 10th-seeded Georgia on Friday in Charlotte, N.C.
Wyoming at Northern Iowa 1:40 PM ET
A standout season for Northern Iowa keeps getting better. The Panthers, who won the Missouri Valley Conference tournament and have matched the program’s single-season record for victories, followed up those feats Sunday by garnering the highest NCAA Tournament seed in its history. Northern Iowa is the fifth seed in the East Region and will face 12th-seeded Wyoming on Friday in Seattle.
Buffalo at West Virginia 2:10 PM ET
West Virginia, a No. 5 seed from the Big 12 Conference, faces Buffalo, a No. 12 seed from the Mid-American Conference, in an NCAA Tournament second-round Midwest Regional game Friday in Columbus, Ohio. The Mountaineers are back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012, when they lost their opener to Gonzaga 77-54. West Virginia has dropped three of its last four games, including an 80-70 setback against Baylor in a Big 12 Conference tournament quarterfinal Thursday.
Indiana at Wichita St. 2:45 PM ET
Indiana was considered a bubble team for the NCAA Tournament after finishing tied for seventh in the Big Ten regular season and winning one game at the conference tournament. The Hoosiers were awarded the No. 10-seed in the Midwest Region, however, and will open play Friday against No. 7 Wichita State in Omaha, Neb. Indiana started 5-1 in the Big Ten, including a win over conference runner-up Wisconsin, but haven’t been able to string together two straight wins since.
Belmont at Virginia 3:10 PM ET
Regular season ACC champion Virginia had its sights set on a second straight tournament title and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament until getting stopped 61-57 by North Carolina in the conference semifinals. That loss dropped the Cavaliers to a two-seed in the East Region where they will open play against No. 15 Belmont on Friday in Charlotte, N.C. Virginia, which is in the field for back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1994-95, lost 61-59 to Michigan last season in the Sweet 16.
UC Irvine at Louisville 4:10 PM ET
When it comes to teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference, most of the attention will fall on Virginia and Duke - but don't sleep on the Louisville Cardinals, who open their 41st NCAA Tournament appearance Friday afternoon against UC Irvine in the East Regional in Seattle. Rick Pitino's crew comes into the tournament in a minor slump, splitting its last eight games. But the Cardinals turn it on at tournament time, reaching the Final Four in two of the past three years and winning it all in 2013.
Valparaiso at Maryland 4:40 PM ET
Maryland looks to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament when it begins its journey against Valparaiso in the second round in Columbus, Ohio. The Terrapins won a school-record 26 regular-season games in their inaugural campaign in the Big Ten before being bounced in the semifinals of the conference tournament by Michigan State. Fourth-seeded Maryland has won eight of its last nine games overall and hopes to make a splash in its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2010.
Oklahoma St. at Oregon 6:50 PM ET
Oregon, seeded No. 8 in the West Region, will open the NCAA Tournament against No. 9 Oklahoma State for the second time in three years when the teams meet Friday in Omaha, Neb. None of the Ducks who played in that 68-55 victory in San Jose are still around, but Le’Bryan Nash and Michael Cobbins started that game for Oklahoma State and both continue to play key roles for the Cowboys. Nash leads the team at 17.1 points a game and Cobbins leads in rebounding at 5.9.
Robert Morris at Duke 7:10 PM ET
Despite early ousters in two of its last three NCAA Tournament appearances, Duke has typically enjoyed much more success whenever it has earned a No. 1 seed. The Blue Devils, who face Robert Morris in second-round action in Charlotte, N.C. on Friday, were bounced from the Big Dance in their opening game as a No. 2 seed by Lehigh in 2012 and as a No. 3 seed versus Mercer last season. Duke, however, has advanced to the Final Four six of the 12 times it has been a No. 1 seed.
Davidson at Iowa 7:20 PM ET
Tenth-seeded Davidson will be making its third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four seasons under coach Bob McKillop as the high-scoring Wildcats take on seventh seeded Iowa in next Friday's South Region matchup. The nation's sixth-highest scoring team (79.9) was denied entry into the Atlantic 10 Championship by VCU 93-73 in the semifinals, and the Rams took home the title a day later. The Wildcats had previously won 10 straight games before the setback.
Albany at Oklahoma 7:27 PM ET
Two teams coming in on the opposite end of the emotional spectrum face off when No. 14 seed Albany faces third-seeded Oklahoma on Friday in the second round of the East Regional in Columbus, Ohio. The Great Danes won their third consecutive America East tournament in dramatic fashion on Saturday when junior guard Peter Hooley grabbed a long rebound and then sank a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1.6 seconds left to give Albany a 51-50 victory over Stony Brook.
Coastal Carolina at Wisconsin 9:20 PM ET
Wisconsin begins its quest for an NCAA Tournament championship when it faces Coastal Carolina in the second round Friday in Omaha, Nebraska. The Badgers dropped a tight 74-73 decision to Kentucky in the national semifinal last year and hope to do one better after winning the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles. Wisconsin, which is the top seed in the West Region, matched a school record for most victories in a season and looks to claim its first NCAA Tournament title since 1941.
South Dakota State at Vanderbilt 9:30 PM ET
Building for the future, Vanderbilt will meet South Dakota State in the second round of the NIT at Nashville, Tenn. on Friday night. Vandy rallied from an early deficit to win at St. Mary's in its tournament opener on Wednesday getting 21 points from Damian Jones and 17 from Riley LaChance. The young Commodores, who start three freshmen and a sophomore, gave coach Kevin Stallings his eighth 20-win season at the school.
St. John's at San Diego St. 9:40 PM ET
Two teams that have endured a recent disappointing performance will collide when No. 8 seed San Diego State takes on No. 9 seed St. John's in an NCAA Tournament South Regional second-round matchup in Charlotte on Friday. The Aztecs made a run to the Mountain West tournament championship before getting upset, 45-43, against Wyoming. The Red Storm enters the postseason on the heels of a pounding from Villanova in the regular season finale and a first-round exit from the Big East tournament.
North Dakota State at Gonzaga 9:50 PM ET
Some believe Gonzaga has a chance to stand up to Kentucky and win its first NCAA Tournament and the second-seeded Bulldogs begin their quest by taking on North Dakota State on Friday in the South Regional in Seattle. Gonzaga was in contention for a No. 1 seed before losing to BYU 73-70 on Feb. 28 in its regular-season finale - snapping win streaks of 41 at home and 22 overall, but exacted revenge from the Cougars with a 91-75 victory in the West Coast Conference tournament final on March 10.
Dayton at Providence 9:57 PM ET
Providence ended a 10-year NCAA Tournament drought last season, but was quickly sent back home in heartbreaking fashion. The sixth-seeded Friars eye their first victory at the Big Dance in 18 years Friday when they meet Dayton in the second round in Columbus, Ohio. Providence dropped a 79-77 decision to North Carolina as a No. 11 seed last year, when it was unable to hold a late seven-point lead and handed its fourth straight tournament loss.
