Preview Roundups
March 14, 2014
Florida St. at Virginia 12:00 PM ET
Virginia starts the ACC tournament as the top seed for the first time since 1981 when it plays Florida State in Friday's quarterfinals in Greensboro, N.C. The Cavaliers lead the nation in scoring defense and will depend on a balanced offense as they attempt to snap a four-game losing streak in ACC tournament play and reach the semifinals for the first time since 1995. The ninth-seeded Seminoles helped their chances for an NCAA bid by edging Maryland 67-65 in the second round Thursday.
Illinois at Michigan 12:00 PM ET
Michigan was supposed to unravel when Mitch McGary was lost to a back injury, but it proved to be the turning point of the season instead. The top-seeded Wolverines, who eye their sixth straight win in Friday's quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament in Indianapolis against Illinois, sported a 6-4 record when their rugged forward was ruled out indefinitely. The Wolverines rallied to win 17 of their final 20 games, including 15 in league play – the most by the school since 1993.
St. Bonaventure at Saint Louis 12:00 PM ET
Saint Louis and Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Jordair Jett will open the conference tournament Friday against St. Bonaventure in a quarterfinal game in Brooklyn, N.Y. The top-seeded Billikens beat No. 9 St. Bonaventure 66-60 on Jan. 15 in the only meeting this season. “It's not easy to score against them, it's not easy to defend them,” Saint Louis coach Jim Crews said after the game.
Missouri at Florida 1:00 PM ET
No. 1 Florida looks to follow up a perfect run through the SEC season with a quality showing in the conference tournament when it faces Missouri in a quarterfinal matchup Friday in Atlanta. The Gators were the first team to ever go 18-0 in SEC play, a run they capped with a rousing 84-65 win over rival Kentucky at home Saturday. Included in the unbeaten campaign was a 68-58 win over the Tigers on Feb. 4.
Pittsburgh at North Carolina 2:00 PM ET
North Carolina’s 12-game winning streak ended in its regular-season finale and the Tar Heels look to start another extended run when they face Pittsburgh in the ACC tournament quarterfinals Friday in Greensboro, N.C. Fourth-seeded North Carolina started its league season 1-4 before Marcus Paige and James Michael McAdoo led a resurgence that ended with a 93-81 loss to Duke on Saturday. No. 5 seed Pittsburgh rolled over Wake Forest 84-55 on Thursday in its first-ever ACC tournament game.
Ohio St. at Nebraska 2:25 PM ET
Nebraska opened conference play with four straight losses before a Jan. 20 win over Ohio State turned the tide of its season. The fourth-seeded Cornhuskers figure to assure themselves of their first invite to the Big Dance since 1998 if they can defeat the fifth-seeded Buckeyes again Friday in the Big Ten quarterfinals in Indianapolis. Nebraska is 10-3 since upending Ohio State at home and coming off perhaps its most impressive win of the season – 77-68 over Wisconsin.
South Carolina at Tennessee 3:25 PM ET
Tennessee seeks a much-needed victory in its push for an NCAA tournament berth when it tackles South Carolina in the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament Friday in Atlanta. The fourth-seeded Volunteers got a big boost in their bid to get off the bubble when they crushed Missouri 72-45 on Saturday, but a loss in the quarterfinals could be damaging. Tennessee has at least put itself in the picture with a four-game winning streak that includes three straight wins by an average of 31 points.
Richmond at VCU 6:30 PM ET
Virginia Commonwealth and Richmond were hurtling in opposite directions coming out of the regular season, but the seventh-seeded Spiders got back on track with a first-round win over Duquesne and now will try to upset second-seeded VCU in the Atlantic 10 tournament quarterfinals Friday in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Rams defeated Richmond 56-50 on March 6, but they had to rally from a four-point halftime deficit.
Minnesota at Wisconsin 6:30 PM ET
Wisconsin won three regular-season titles and two Big Ten tournaments in coach Bo Ryan’s first seven seasons, but will try to end a five-year drought starting Friday when it faces Minnesota in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament in Indianapolis. Ryan’s last two senior classes have come up empty after each of his first 10 won at least one league title. “I don’t have a ring. I want a ring and everybody else on my team feels the same way,” Badgers guard Josh Gasser told Madison.com.
Seton Hall at Providence 7:00 PM ET
Seton Hall is enjoying its first two-game winning streak in the Big East tournament in more than a decade but will need to make it four in a row to gain an improbable entry to the NCAA tournament. The eighth-seeded Pirates will try to take their third straight when they face No. 4 seed Providence in the semifinals in New York on Friday. The Friars improved their at-large resume with a win over St. John’s in the quarterfinals.
Iowa St. at Kansas 7:00 PM ET
Top-seeded Kansas didn’t miss injured center Joel Embiid in its Big 12 tournament opener and attempts to claim another victory when it meets fourth-seeded Iowa State in Friday’s semifinals in Kansas City. Andrew Wiggins scored 30 points and Tarik Black matched a career high with 12 rebounds as the No. 10 Jayhawks notched a 77-70 overtime victory over Oklahoma State. The No. 16 Cyclones received 24 points and 10 rebounds from Melvin Ejim in a 91-85 win over Kansas State.
Houston at Louisville 7:00 PM ET
Louisville has won its last nine conference tournament games and the second-seeded Cardinals go for 10 in a row when they meet sixth-seeded Houston on Friday in an American Athletic Conference tournament semifinal in Memphis. The fifth-ranked Cardinals prepped for this game by posting a 61-point win against Rutgers in the quarterfinals, the most lopsided outcome in Division I this season. Louisville has already trounced the Cougars twice this season, included a 39-point win in January.
Louisiana State at Kentucky 7:00 PM ET
Kentucky looks to put a disappointing regular season behind it when it faces LSU in the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament in Atlanta on Friday. The Wildcats became the first team since 1979-80 Indiana to start out as the preseason No. 1 only to drop out of the Top 25 completely in the same campaign. "We've got to get our mojo back," coach John Calipari admitted to reporters. "Two weeks ago we were playing and we were looking pretty good and right now we're not, so we gotta get it back."
N.C. State at Syracuse 7:00 PM ET
A few weeks ago, Syracuse looked like a strong candidate to cap its first season in the ACC by winning the conference tournament en route to a No. 1 seed in the NCAAs. The No. 2-seeded Orange, who make their ACC tournament debut against No. 7 seed North Carolina State in the quarterfinals on Friday in Greensboro, N.C., can still reach their goals despite dropping four of their last six games after a 25-0 start.
Northwestern at Michigan St 8:55 PM ET
Michigan State has no concerns about qualifying for the NCAA tournament, but knows time is running out to gel entering Friday’s Big Ten tournament quarterfinal against Northwestern in Indianapolis. Thanks to a rash of injuries to key players such as Gary Harris and Adreian Payne, the Spartans have used 15 different lineups over their last 26 games. Even though Michigan State is back to full health, the lack of chemistry has played a role in the team dropping seven of its last 12.
UNLV at San Diego St. 9:00 PM ET
The competition gets a little tougher for San Diego State as it tries to make a claim for a high seed in the NCAA tournament, with the Aztecs taking on the “host” school - UNLV - in a Mountain West tournament semifinal contest Friday. The Rebels will be playing on their home floor at the Thomas & Mack Center, where they've gone 12-7 this season. One of those losses, though, was to San Diego State just nine days ago as the Aztecs swept the regular-season series.
Colorado at Arizona 9:00 PM ET
Colorado heads into Friday’s semifinals of the Pac-12 tournament against top-seeded Arizona eager to erase the memory of the last meeting, when the Wildcats rolled to an 88-61 victory in Boulder on Feb. 22. Of course, fifth-seeded Colorado isn’t the first team to suffer a humiliating loss at the hands of Arizona. Just ask No. 8 seed Utah, which set Pac-12 tournament lows in points scored, field goals (12) and field-goal percentage (25.5) in a 71-39 loss to the Wildcats on Thursday.
Connecticut at Cincinnati 9:00 PM ET
Fourth-seeded Connecticut found its offense just in time for a rematch with defensive-minded and top-seeded Cincinnati in Friday's American Athletic Conference tournament semifinal at the FedExForum in Memphis, Tenn. The No. 21 Huskies shot their way out of their recent slump while running past Memphis on Thursday. "We were making shots and we were moving the basketball," UConn coach Kevin Ollie told The American Digital Network afterward.
Clemson at Duke 9:00 PM ET
Jabari Parker’s college career may conclude in the coming weeks, but the ACC Freshman of the Year looks to lead third-seed Duke to its 20th conference title. The Blue Devils begin their drive for another tournament championship Friday in the quarterfinals against No. 6 seed Clemson, and Parker’s performance will be a big factor in whether Duke claims the title Sunday. The Tigers rallied from a nine-point deficit to oust Georgia Tech 69-65 in overtime in the second round.
Mississippi at Georgia 9:25 PM ET
Third-seeded Georgia looks to make a big splash in the SEC tournament as it faces Mississippi in the quarterfinals Friday in Atlanta. The No. 6 seed Bulldogs closed out the regular season by winning eight of their last 10 games, but likely need a few more victories to secure an NCAA tournament berth. "I realize in November that Georgia was not an at-large team, but right now we are pretty darn good," coach Mark Fox told reporters.
Baylor at Texas 9:30 PM ET
Seventh-seeded Baylor attempts to extend its impressive tournament run when it faces third-seeded Texas in Friday’s Big 12 semifinals in Kansas City. The Bears overpowered Texas Christian in the first round, then jumped all over No. 18 Oklahoma at the start of Thursday’s semifinals and finished with a 78-73 victory. The Longhorns staggered down the stretch of the regular season but crushed sixth-seeded West Virginia 66-49 on Thursday and swept two regular-season meetings with Baylor.
Xavier at Creighton 9:30 PM ET
Considering what Doug McDermott has accomplished in his last two games, the only question is what the Creighton star can possibly do for an encore. The second-seeded Bluejays take on No. 3 seed Xavier in the Big East semifinals in New York City on Friday, one day after McDermott set a Big East tournament record with 27 first-half points en route to 35 in Creighton's 84-62 victory over DePaul.
Stanford at UCLA 11:30 PM ET
As the lowest-seeded team remaining in the Pac-12 tournament, Stanford faces an uphill battle in Friday’s semifinal against No. 2 seed UCLA in Las Vegas. After watching the sixth-seeded Cardinal dismantle Arizona State 79-58 in the quarterfinals, however, it’s unlikely the Bruins are going to underestimate them. The teams split two meetings during the regular season, with Stanford losing 91-74 at UCLA on Jan. 23 before rolling to an 83-74 home win over the Bruins on Feb. 22.
Boise St. at New Mexico 11:30 PM ET
New Mexico continues its pursuit of a third consecutive Mountain West Conference tournament title when it takes on Boise State in the semifinals Friday in Las Vegas. The second-seeded Lobos clicked on all cylinders in a 93-77 win over Fresno State on Thursday, getting 21 points apiece from Cameron Bairstow and Alex Kirk. New Mexico shot 56.9 percent from the floor in producing its best offensive showing since before Thanksgiving and winning its seventh straight MWC tourney game.
