Preview Roundups
March 11, 2015
Florida St. at Clemson 12:00 PM ET
Two of the top underclassmen in the league look to make an impact when ninth-seeded Florida State meets eighth-seeded Clemson in the second round of the ACC tournament Wednesday at Greensboro, N.C. Clemson sophomore Jaron Blossomgame averages 13.1 points and 8.2 rebounds this season after being a nonfactor in the conference tournament last March. Xavier Rathan-Mayes leads the Seminoles with 14.4 points per game – 22 the last three games -- and was named to the ACC’s All-Freshman team.
Boston College at North Carolina 2:00 PM ET
Fifth-seeded North Carolina looks to rebound from an up-and-down finish to the regular season when it meets Boston College on Wednesday in the second round of the ACC tournament at Greensboro, N.C. The 19th-ranked Tar Heels dropped six of their last 10 after winning six in a row and need a run to improve their seed in the NCAA Tournament. Boston College, the 12th seed, is led by guard Olivier Hanlan and edged Georgia Tech 66-65 in the first round Tuesday for its fourth straight victory.
Washington St. at California 3:00 PM ET
California and Washington State have never won a Pac-12 or Pac-10 tournament since it went to its modern format in 1987, but one team will get a rare victory when the teams meet Wednesday in the tournament opener in Las Vegas. Washington State, seeded No. 9, started 3-1 in conference play, which included a win over California, but finished 7-11. No. 8 California has lost five of six following a five-game winning streak that began with a win against the Cougars on Jan. 29.
Penn St. at Nebraska 4:30 PM ET
A loss to Penn State just over a month ago set off Nebraska’s longest losing streak in recent memory. The 12th-seeded Cornhuskers, who kick off the Big Ten tournament Wednesday in first-round action at Chicago versus the No. 13 seed Nittany Lions, improved to 5-5 in conference play following a 76-60 victory over Northwestern on Feb. 3. Nebraska dropped a 56-43 decision at Penn State four days later, beginning an eight-game skid that is the school’s worst since a nine-game slide in 2002-03.
Southern California at Arizona St. 5:30 PM ET
Arizona State bounced back from an 0-4 start in Pac-12 play to secure the fifth seed in this week’s conference tournament at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where the Sun Devils will face No. 12 seed USC in Wednesday’s opening round. The Sun Devils were picked to finish ninth in the preseason, but coach Herb Sendek’s squad closed by winning five of its final seven games. “I don’t know that I’ve ever been part of a team that has improved more over the course of the season,” Sendek told reporters.
Pittsburgh at N.C. State 7:00 PM ET
North Carolina State rides a wave of momentum into the ACC Tournament after winning five of its final six games, while Pittsburgh struggled in dropping its final three regular-season contests. The No. 10-seed Panthers take on the seventh-seeded Wolfpack in the second round of the tournament Wednesday in Greensboro, N.C. “What you hope to have is your team playing its best basketball in February and March,” N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried said after the Wolfpack beat Syracuse 71-57 on Saturday.
Texas Christian at Kansas St. 7:00 PM ET
Kansas State has only one way to stretch its streak of NCAA Tournament appearances to six and that is to win the Big 12 tournament title in Kansas City. The eighth-seeded Wildcats open play against ninth-seeded TCU on Wednesday and a dash to the title would require four consecutive victories, including one against top-seeded Kansas on Thursday. The Horned Frogs went 4-14 in conference play but are dangerous enough to knock off Kansas State.
Marquette at Seton Hall 7:00 PM ET
After a win over Villanova on Jan. 3, Seton Hall sat at 12-2 and appeared destined for a special season. Just over two months later, the Pirates find themselves as the No. 8 seed in the Big East tournament and playing on the first day of the event Wednesday. Their opponent, ninth-seeded Marquette, heads to Madison Square Garden seeking back-to-back victories for the first time since the calendar turned to 2015.
Auburn at Mississippi St. 7:00 PM ET
Antoine Mason will be back in the fold when Auburn begins play in the first round of the SEC Tournament against Mississippi State on Wednesday in Nashville. Mason, the 13th-seeded Tigers' second-leading scorer, missed the final three games of the regular season following the death of his father, former NBA forward Anthony Mason. Auburn went 0-3 without its senior guard to extend its losing streak to six games.
Rutgers at Minnesota 7:00 PM ET
Outside a 5-2 stretch that started with an 89-80 win over Rutgers on Jan. 17, Minnesota can relate to the struggles of its new Big Ten rival. After losing at the buzzer over the weekend and missing out on a chance to rest in the first round of the Big Ten tournament, the 11th-seeded Golden Gophers hope to create some momentum at the event Wednesday in Chicago against the Scarlet Knights. Minnesota opened league play with five straight losses and closed it by winning once in its final six games.
Colorado at Oregon St. 9:00 PM ET
Colorado enters this week’s Pac-12 tournament at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas as a 10th seed, but there’s reason to believe in the Buffaloes. Coach Tad Boyle’s squad begins play Wednesday with a first-round matchup against seventh-seeded Oregon State, which is down to seven available scholarship players and lost six of its final seven games. The key for Colorado could be the play of forward Josh Scott, who has averaged 22.3 points and nine rebounds over the past three games.
Virginia Tech at Miami-Florida 9:00 PM ET
Miami (Fla.) finished the regular season with five wins in its last seven games and may need one or perhaps two more this week to assure itself an NCAA Tournament bid. The sixth-seeded Hurricanes look to pocket one Wednesday when they take on 14th seed Virginia Tech in the second round of the ACC tournament at Greensboro, N.C. Miami may have to beat the Hokies for the second time in five days without second-leading scorer Angel Rodriguez, who is questionable with a wrist injury.
Texas Tech at Texas 9:30 PM ET
There is little margin for error for Texas when it comes to the NCAA Tournament as the seventh-seeded Longhorns open play against 10th-seeded Texas Tech on Wednesday in the Big 12 tournament in Kansas City. Texas is considered a bubble team and a one-and-done in the conference tournament against the last-place team will surely be a death knell. On the other hand, a deep run to the tournament championship game should limit the amount of sweating the Longhorns do on Selection Sunday.
Creighton at DePaul 9:30 PM ET
Two teams that endured a disappointing run through the Big East regular season square off Wednesday at Madison Square Garden in the opening round of the conference tournament. DePaul, the seventh seed, enters having lost seven straight games and has only one victory since Jan. 22. Tenth-seeded Creighton has lost three straight contests, although those defeats came by a total of six points.
Missouri at South Carolina 9:30 PM ET
After some early struggles in conference play, South Carolina could be primed for a quality showing in the SEC Tournament. The 11th-seeded Gamecocks will try to ride the momentum of a big road win to finish the regular season when they take on last-place Missouri in the first round Wednesday in Nashville. Michael Carrera scored 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting in a 60-49 win at Tennessee on Saturday, helping South Carolina improve to 5-6 in its last 11 games after opening league play 1-6.
Washington at Stanford 11:30 PM ET
Stanford will try to turn things around before it’s too late when the sixth-seeded Cardinal face No. 11 seed Washington in the opening round of the Pac-12 tournament Wednesday night in Las Vegas. Stanford comes in riding a season-long three-game losing streak, most recently a 22-point drubbing against regular-season conference champion Arizona. Washington, meanwhile, is coming off an upset victory against then-No. 13 Utah after the Huskies had lost 10 of their previous 11 games.
