Preview Roundups
March 05, 2014
Mississippi St. at Georgia 7:00 PM ET
Georgia has won 10 SEC games for the first time since 1996-97, but Saturday’s loss to Arkansas showed the Bulldogs still have work to do in order to seriously challenge Kentucky and Florida in next week’s conference tournament. Georgia hosts Mississippi State on Wednesday, looking to win for the seventh time in nine games and solidify its hold on third place in the SEC heading into Saturday’s regular-season finale at LSU.
Duke at Wake Forest 7:00 PM ET
Fourth-ranked Duke followed a grueling schedule with a week off to prepare for the final week of the regular season and Wednesday's trip to Wake Forest. The Blue Devils won four of their five games during an 11-day stretch and can move into a third-place tie with North Carolina with a win against the tumbling Demon Deacons. Duke's rematch with the rival Tar Heels on Saturday will likely determine the ACC's third and fourth seeds for next week's conference tournament.
Louisville at Southern Methodist 7:00 PM ET
Southern Methodist plays one of the most anticipated home games in school history Wednesday when defending champion Louisville pays a visit. The 18th-ranked Mustangs are 15-0 at home, including 9-0 at Moody Coliseum, which re-opened in January following a major renovation. SMU tuned up for No. 9 Louisville by defeating Central Florida 70-55 on Saturday.
Rutgers at Connecticut 7:00 PM ET
All-American candidate Shabazz Napier will suit up for his final home game Wednesday when No. 19 Connecticut meets visiting Rutgers in an American Athletic Conference game. Napier, a finalist for all the major awards - including the prestigious Wooden Award, has the Huskies back in the national rankings as they prepare for their final two regular season games, including a season-ending rematch with No. 9 Louisville.
Nebraska at Indiana 7:00 PM ET
While it continues to work itself out of the bottom half of the Big Ten, Indiana did its fair share to create chaos among the top half of the conference last week. The Hoosiers, who host Nebraska on Wednesday, downed Iowa to drop the Hawkeyes into a fourth-place tie with the Cornhuskers. Four days later, Indiana claimed its fourth Top 25 victory with Sunday’s home win over then-No. 20 Ohio State, knocking the Buckeyes out of the rankings and a half-game behind Nebraska and Iowa in the standings.
Mississippi at Arkansas 8:00 PM ET
Arkansas looks to extend its winning streak to six games when it hosts Mississippi on Wednesday. The Razorbacks have won seven of their last eight contests, including a 71-67 overtime victory over No. 24 Kentucky, to fall firmly on the bubble and hope to continue their late-season surge and earn their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2008. "We are playing team basketball and it's made a difference because now we are playing all-out for 40 minutes," coach Mike Anderson told reporters.
Texas A&M at Missouri 8:00 PM ET
Texas A&M and host Missouri enter Wednesday's meeting in a four-way tie for sixth place in the SEC with a chance to improve their conference tournament seeds. The Tigers, Aggies, LSU and Mississippi all sit a game back of fourth-place Tennessee and Arkansas. Missouri needs wins to extend the league's longest active streak of five straight NCAA Tournament appearances while the Aggies are trying to earn a postseason berth of any kind for the first time under third-year coach Billy Kennedy.
Texas Tech at Kansas 8:00 PM ET
With its 10th consecutive Big 12 regular-season title already in the trophy case, No. 8 Kansas and its dissatisfied coach host Texas Tech on Wednesday. The Jayhawks clinched the No. 1 seed in the Big 12 tournament when Texas and Iowa State lost Saturday before they blew a 10-point lead in the second half of a 72-65 loss at Oklahoma State. The performance so upset Bill Self, he didn't let his team accept the trophy - even though it was in the building.
Tennessee at Auburn 8:00 PM ET
Tennessee travels to Auburn on Wednesday and, depending on how events transpire, could earn itself an extra day of rest for next week’s SEC tournament. The Volunteers are tied with Arkansas for fourth place in the SEC standings, but they own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Razorbacks and could clinch the fourth seed – and a bye into the quarterfinals – with a victory and an Arkansas loss at home to Mississippi. Auburn currently sits in 12th place and could finish anywhere from 11th to 14th.
Texas Christian at Texas 8:00 PM ET
Texas is scuffling to the finish line but has a good chance to get back on track Wednesday against visiting Texas Christian. The Longhorns have dropped out of the top 25 following a 1-3 stretch that included three road defeats by a combined 52 points. Texas has won seven straight home games, however, and is likely going to make it eight in a row against a Horned Frogs squad that has not won since the calendar turned to 2014.
Colorado at Stanford 9:00 PM ET
There is a decent chance that both Stanford and Colorado will receive an NCAA Tournament berth, but neither team should get too comfortable. Stanford, in particular, could use a win over the visiting Buffaloes on Wednesday after losing two straight to the Arizona schools. Coach Johnny Dawkins is seeking his first trip to the NCAA Tournament in six seasons at Stanford, and likely needs wins over Colorado and Utah (Saturday) to ensure a first-round bye in next week’s Pac-12 tournament.
Purdue at Wisconsin 9:00 PM ET
A win over Purdue in late January provided Wisconsin with a much-needed jolt during one of its worst stretches under coach Bo Ryan, sending the teams in opposite directions since. The 11th-ranked Badgers, who close out their home schedule on Wednesday against the Boilermakers, dropped five out of six games from Jan. 14-Feb. 1 to bring the momentum created from a school-record 16-0 start to a screeching halt. Wisconsin’s only victory over that stretch was 72-58 at Purdue.
West Virginia at Oklahoma 9:00 PM ET
Postseason positioning should be the motivating factor when No. 23 Oklahoma hosts West Virginia in a Big 12 game Wednesday night. The Sooners entered the week in a four-way tie for second in the conference with No. 17 Iowa State, Kansas State, and Texas, but Kansas State was upset by Oklahoma State on Monday to fall a half-game back. The win also pulled Oklahoma State within a half-game of West Virginia for the sixth and final berth into the Big 12 tourney quarterfinals.
Dayton at Saint Louis 9:00 PM ET
No. 16 Saint Louis looked to be on its way to an undefeated conference season and potentially a No. 2 or No. 3 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. But suddenly the Billikens have lost two straight and their lead atop the Atlantic 10 is down to one game with two to play. Coach Jim Crews is hoping for a turnaround in the team's final home game Tuesday against Dayton.
Air Force at New Mexico 9:00 PM ET
No. 21 New Mexico looks to win its sixth game in a row when it hosts Air Force on Wednesday. The Lobos have won 11 of their last 12 games to vault into the Top 25 and hope to take of business against the Falcons without peeking ahead to the San Diego State clash on March 8, which will determine the Mountain West regular-season champion. I haven't talked about that game," coach Craig Neal told reporters. "I've talked about it being one step in a journey to win a championship."
Arizona at Oregon St. 11:00 PM ET
With Arizona fresh off clinching the Pac-12 regular-season title, Oregon State may be catching the No. 3 team in the country at the right time when it hosts the Wildcats on Wednesday. While Arizona wants to stay sharp as it vies for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Beavers can finish .500 or better in conference play for the first time since 1992-93 with victories in their last two games, and impress the NIT selection committee in the process.
Utah at California 11:00 PM ET
California hasn’t been playing like an NCAA Tournament-caliber team in recent weeks, but the Golden Bears remain dangerous heading into Wednesday’s game against visiting Utah. Point guard Justin Cobbs leads the team in scoring (15.8) and assists (5.8), and nobody wants to face the front line of David Kravish and Richard Solomon in next week’s Pac-12 tournament. Solomon averages a league-high 9.8 rebounds for the Golden Bears, who have lost seven of their last 11 games.
San Diego St. at UNLV 11:05 PM ET
UNLV's hopes of maintaining its hold on third place in the Mountain West Conference took a major hit when it was announced that rebounding star Roscoe Smith will miss Wednesday's home game against 10th-ranked San Diego State with a concussion. Smith, a transfer from UConn, ranks fifth nationally with 15 double-doubles on the season and will be re-evaluated later in the week with the hopes of returning for the postseason.
