March 01, 2014
Cincinnati at Connecticut 12:00 PM ET
Connecticut and No. 12 Cincinnati may both feel optimistic about their postseason plans, but it is unlikely either squad is overly confident about its offense. The AAC-leading Bearcats enter Saturday’s road tilt against the Huskies with a full week to recover from their 58-57 loss to Louisville, which allowed the Cardinals to move within a half-game of tying Cincy atop the league standings. The loss was Cincinnati’s second in a row on the road in which it failed to score 60 points.
Vanderbilt at Tennessee 12:00 PM ET
Every game counts in the SEC race as seven teams are tied or within a game of fourth place, the last spot that carries a double-bye in the upcoming SEC tournament. Tennessee enters Saturday's home game with Vanderbilt as one of three teams tied for fourth. The Volunteers sit one game ahead of the Commodores in the crowded conference race.
South Florida at Rutgers 12:00 PM ET
South Florida travels to Rutgers for an American Athletic Conference showdown featuring teams looking to shake significant losing streaks with three regular-season games remaining. The Bulls have dropped five straight games, six of their last seven and are a lowly 3-11 in 2014. There was a moral victory for South Florida last time out, as the Bulls fell to Connecticut 61-56 after a 43-point drubbing two weeks prior.
Miami-Florida at N.C. State 12:00 PM ET
North Carolina State looks to rebound from a demoralizing overtime defeat that damaged its NCAA Tournament hopes when it hosts Miami (Fla.) on Saturday. The Wolfpack dropped an 85-84 decision to No. 21 North Carolina at home Wednesday for their third loss in four games and have three regular-season contests left to improve their postseason resume. North Carolina State’s T.J. Warren scored at least 30 points in four of the last eight games.
Texas Christian at West Virginia 1:30 PM ET
Texas Christian’s five-game winning streak ended against West Virginia on Jan. 4, and the Horned Frogs have not won since. Texas Christian travels to West Virginia on Saturday having lost 15 in a row, its 9-3 start to the season nothing more than a distant memory. The Mountaineers are not playing well either, losing four of their past five games after allowing 44 second-half points in an 83-66 loss at Iowa State on Wednesday.
Texas Tech at Baylor 1:30 PM ET
Baylor hosts Texas Tech on Saturday in a late-season game that is important to both teams. The Bears need wins to stay in the NCAA Tournament picture while the Red Raiders are looking to snap a four-game losing streak. "We know how important these last games are, and we came out with a chip on our shoulders," Baylor guard Kenny Chery told the media after Wednesday's rally against No. 23 Texas fell short. "We played physical basketball and responded."
Mississippi St. at Missouri 1:30 PM ET
Back-to-back crushing losses have left Missouri facing a sobering reality: Lose Saturday and forget about playing in the NCAA Tournament - barring a win in the SEC tourney. The Tigers have plenty at stake this weekend as they brace for a matinee encounter with visiting Mississippi State on Saturday. Missouri wound up in a must-win situation after falling to host Alabama 80-73 and getting thoroughly dominated in a 71-56 defeat at the hands of Georgia.
Missouri St. at Wichita St. 2:00 PM ET
Second-ranked Wichita State already has enjoyed an historic campaign and looks to complete an undefeated regular season when it hosts Missouri State on Saturday. The Shockers have won 30 straight games and are aiming to become the first team to complete its regular season undefeated since Saint Joseph's (27-0) in 2003-04.
Louisville at Memphis 2:00 PM ET
Memphis is looking at a brutal finish to its regular season and did not do itself any favors with a loss at Houston on Thursday. The 22nd-ranked Tigers will begin a string of three straight against the top three teams in the American Athletic Conference when they host No. 4 Louisville on Saturday. The Cardinals, who have won seven straight, will be looking for some revenge after falling to Memphis at home on Jan. 9.
Pittsburgh at Notre Dame 2:00 PM ET
Few Big East teams enjoyed any prolonged success against Pittsburgh in recent years, but even a change in conferences couldn’t shake the one team that has given it the most trouble. The Panthers, who travel to Notre Dame on Saturday for the only meeting between the first-year ACC schools, have lost five straight to the Irish. Perhaps no game epitomized Pittsburgh’s struggles against Notre Dame more than a 51-42 loss last February – its second-lowest point total in the last seven seasons.
Colorado at Utah 2:00 PM ET
With four teams tied for third place in the Pac-12, only two will earn first-round byes in the conference tournament, and Colorado hopes to one of them. The Buffaloes can take a huge step toward that goal Saturday when they visit Utah, which is two games behind the logjam and plays three of those clubs down the stretch. The teams are coming off much different outcomes as Colorado was crushed by No. 3 Arizona 88-61 on Feb. 22 while the Utes routed Arizona State 86-63 on Sunday.
North Carolina at Virginia Tech 2:30 PM ET
North Carolina is riding a 10-game winning streak for the first time since February 2009 and the No. 21 Tar Heels will try to keep it going Saturday when they travel to Virginia Tech for an ACC game. The Hokies have lost 13 of their last 14 to fall into last place in the conference standings and come in with a host of injuries. North Carolina received a scare Wednesday against North Carolina State, rallying from six points down with less than two minutes remaining in overtime to win 85-84.
Auburn at Alabama 3:00 PM ET
It doesn't have the national significance as a matchup on the gridiron, but the Alabama-Auburn rivalry is heated on the basketball court as well, with both teams trying to get a little momentum heading into the SEC tournament. The Crimson Tide and visiting Tigers are sitting among the bottom four teams in the conference standings, which means playing a first-round game while the rest of the league gets a bye into the second round.
Illinois at Michigan St 4:00 PM ET
As the postseason approaches, No. 18 Michigan State will have all its key players in the lineup when it hosts Illinois on Saturday. Junior swingman Branden Dawson, averaging 10.2 points and a team-best 8.7 rebounds, is the final piece after missing the last nine games with a broken hand. "(Dawson) is going to play with a little bit of a brace on that doesn't seem like it affects a lot of things, but it still is there," coach Tom Izzo told MLive.com. "How much I play him, I have no clue."
Texas at Oklahoma 4:00 PM ET
The logjam near the top of the Big 12 Conference could clear up - or become tighter - when ranked rivals Texas and host Oklahoma meet Saturday. The No. 23 Longhorns and Iowa State are tied for second place and sit a game ahead of the No. 25 Sooners and Kansas State, which hosts the Cyclones on Saturday. Texas finishes the regular season against the league's bottom two teams - Texas Tech and Texas Christian - while Oklahoma plays sixth-place West Virginia and TCU.
Oregon at Southern California 4:00 PM ET
Oregon can close out its final road trip of the regular season with a sweep of USC in Pac-12 play on Saturday. The Ducks have won four straight games, including an 87-83 double-overtime thriller over UCLA on the road Thursday, to keep alive their NCAA Tournament hopes. Joseph Young, the second-ranked scorer in the conference with 18.9 points per game, has carried Oregon down the stretch while averaging 22 points since Jan. 30.
Louisiana State at Florida 4:00 PM ET
Florida attempts to clinch the SEC regular-season crown and continue the best start in school history when it puts its 20-game winning streak on the line at home against Louisiana State on Saturday. The top-ranked Gators survived another tight one before pulling out a 57-54 win at Vanderbilt on Tuesday, improving to 8-0 on the road in conference play and 13-2 in games decided by single digits.
Syracuse at Virginia 4:00 PM ET
While Syracuse has garnered much of the attention in the ACC this season, it's Virginia that has a chance to clinch the league title when it hosts the Orange on Saturday. The 11th-ranked Cavaliers, winners of 12 straight games, have not secured an outright league crown since 1980-81. The fifth-ranked Orange trail the Cavaliers by 1 1/2 games for first place and control their own destiny should they win their final three contests, beginning with Saturday's showdown in Charlottesville.
Boston College at Wake Forest 4:00 PM ET
Boston College and Wake Forest have each lost seven of eight entering their ACC game Saturday at Wake Forest but at least the Demon Deacons can claim victory in their most recent game. Wake Forest knocked off Clemson on Tuesday, snapping a seven-game losing streak with the 62-57 victory and avoiding just their third winless month of February since 1951. Boston College has lost two straight following its shocking upset of then-No. 1 Syracuse on Feb. 19.
Georgia at Arkansas 4:00 PM ET
Florida and Kentucky were considered the class of the SEC entering the season, but few people expected Georgia and Arkansas occupy the next two spots in the conference standings entering March. The third-place Bulldogs travel to the Razorbacks – who are in a four-way tie for fourth - on Saturday in a game that carries seeding implications for the SEC tournament. Arkansas capped a season sweep of Kentucky on Thursday while Georgia has won six out of seven to move within a game of second place.
Central Florida at Southern Methodist 4:00 PM ET
Southern Methodist can move closer to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1993 when the No. 24 Mustangs attempt to complete a regular-season sweep of Central Florida on Saturday. SMU has thrived in its first season in the American Athletic Conference and second season under coaching icon Larry Brown and is well-positioned to end its long tourney drought. The Knights look for an upset, but Wednesday’s win over Rutgers was only their second in 13 games.
Northwestern at Nebraska 5:00 PM ET
Nebraska’s NCAA Tournament hopes took a big hit in its last game and the Cornhuskers look to get back on track when struggling Northwestern visits on Saturday. Nebraska turned the ball over 15 times to lose at Illinois 60-49 on Wednesday, ending a five-game winning streak, and has three games left in the regular season – two at home where the Cornhuskers have won six in a row. Northwestern has dropped five consecutive contests, starting with a 53-49 defeat against Nebraska on Feb. 8.
Creighton at Xavier 5:00 PM ET
Doug McDermott continues his run up the record books and No. 10 Creighton can move closer to the Big East regular season title when the Bluejays visit Xavier on Saturday. McDermott is up to 10th place on the all-time scoring list with 2,917 points and former Kansas star Danny Manning (2,951) is the next legend he can pass. Xavier is just 4-5 over its last nine games but boasts an impressive 14-1 home record.
Saint Louis at VCU 6:00 PM ET
Saint Louis will try for a second time to clinch at least a share of the Atlantic 10 regular-season title when it visits Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday. The eighth-ranked Billikens' school-record 19-game winning streak came to a stunning end with Thursday's 71-64 loss at home against Duquesne, the league's 10th-place team.
California at Arizona St. 6:00 PM ET
Two teams battling for a bye in the Pac-12 tournament’s first round meet Saturday when California visits Arizona State, which is 15-1 at home this season. The teams are tied with Colorado and Stanford for third place in the conference, with the top four clubs receiving a first-day bye in the Pac-12 tournament in Las Vegas. California is coming off an 87-59 loss at Arizona, while Arizona State posted an impressive 76-64 win over visiting Stanford on Wednesday.
Kentucky at South Carolina 6:00 PM ET
Preseason hype pinpointed No. 15 Kentucky as a team that could possibly go undefeated this season – a notion that has proved more folly than those who perpetuated it in the first place. The freshmen-dominated Wildcats have split their last four games and are saddled with seven losses entering Saturday’s SEC contest at South Carolina. Kentucky fell in overtime to Arkansas on Thursday, its second loss of the season to the Razorbacks.
Minnesota at Michigan 6:00 PM ET
Michigan got a big scare at Purdue on Wednesday but pulled through in overtime to maintain its lead in the Big Ten. Minnesota will try to knock the 16th-ranked Wolverines from that perch when it visits Michigan on Saturday. The Wolverines did not take a lead at Purdue until the first basket of overtime and needed a buzzer-beater from Glenn Robinson III to win for the third time in four games.
Mississippi at Texas A&M 6:00 PM ET
Mississippi looks to keep its hopes of making the NCAA Tournament alive when it travels to College Station to face Texas A&M on Saturday. The Rebels had dropped four games in a row before their 79-67 win over Alabama and will conclude SEC play with two of their last three games on the road. "Looking at the postseason scenarios and the standings can drive you crazy," coach Andy Kennedy told reporters. "What we can do is prepare for Texas A&M and try to keep winning."
Iowa St. at Kansas St. 7:00 PM ET
Iowa State and Kansas State are two of the five Big 12 schools that won’t be sweating out Selection Sunday, but only one of these teams will bolster its NCAA resume Saturday when the No. 17 Cyclones host the Wildcats. Iowa State has won four consecutive games and is tied for second place in the Big 12 while Kansas State is tied for fourth and one victory away from the school’s eighth consecutive 20-win campaign. The Wildcats are a stout 14-1 at home.
Kansas at Oklahoma St. 9:00 PM ET
With a share of its tenth straight Big 12 championship locked up, No. 6 Kansas can focus on finishing the regular season in strong fashion beginning Saturday at Oklahoma State. Not only is the Jayhawks' run the longest division or conference winning streak in all of sports, it's tied for the third longest in college basketball history; by comparison, no other current streak runs longer than three years.
Houston at Temple 9:00 PM ET
Houston looks to win its third game in a row when it hits the road to face Temple on Saturday. The Cougars are coming off an impressive 77-68 win over No. 22 Memphis and will now focus their attention on snapping a six-game road losing streak. "I want to beat Temple, but we want to win as many conference games as we can," coach James Dickey told reporters. "We know what's ahead of us, we have a short turnaround and Temple has played really well at home."
San Diego St. at Fresno St. 10:05 PM ET
San Diego State looks to extend its 40-game win streak against teams from the state of California on Saturday when the 13th-ranked Aztecs visit upset-minded Fresno State. Picked to finish eighth in the Mountain West preseason media poll, the surprising Bulldogs have won seven of their last eight games to move one-half game back of sixth-place Nevada. Fresno State is coming off one of its best efforts in three seasons under coach Rodney Terry, cruising past Boise State 76-56 on Wednesday.
