Preview Roundups
January 22, 2015
South Florida at Temple 6:30 PM ET
Temple has lost three straight games behind a struggling offense that hasn't topped 60 points in any of those contests, although the exact same could be said of USF. Two teams desperate for a victory square off on Temple's home court Thursday in a matchup of skidding American Athletic Conference foes. Temple's slide immediately followed a six-game winning streak while the Bulls have been mired in an extended funk, having dropped 10 of their last 12.
Ohio St. at Northwestern 7:00 PM ET
Ohio State looks to gain some confidence after an up and down start to the Big Ten season when it visits snake-bit Northwestern on Thursday. The Buckeyes have lost two of three – shooting under 40 percent in both defeats -- after winning two in a row and are leaning a bit too much on freshman D’Angelo Russell, who is averaging 21 points the last seven games. Northwestern dropped its last three games by a total of 14 points, including one in overtime, and have lost four straight overall.
DePaul at Seton Hall 7:00 PM ET
Seton Hall looks to solidify its shaky position in the Top 25 when it hosts DePaul on Thursday. The No. 24 Pirates beat St.John's and No. 4 Villanova to climb back into the national rankings for the first time since 2012, but dropped two of their last three games, including a 79-75 overtime loss to Butler on Jan. 13 to fall five spots in the poll. Seton Hall has won eight of its last nine games at the Prudential Center and sets its sights on improving to 7-0 against the Blue Demons at home.
Central Florida at Connecticut 7:00 PM ET
Defending ntional champion Connecticut has already matched its regular-season loss total from a year ago and faces an uphill struggle to make it back to the NCAA Tournament and defend its title. The Huskies attempt to rebound from back-to-back defeats when they host UCF on Thursday in an American Athletic Conference matchup. UConn followed a setback at Tulsa with a lopsided defeat at Stanford on Sunday in a performance that coach Kevin Ollie termed "embarrassing."
Notre Dame at Virginia Tech 7:00 PM ET
Notre Dame coach Mike Brey knows his ninth-ranked Fighting Irish won't panic if they find themselves behind during Thursday's ACC road contest against Virginia Tech. The Irish have found ways to win four tight ACC games and erased a 12-point second-half deficit their last time out. "There's really not panic or worry or discouragement," Brey told reporters. "They do have a strong belief that they're going to figure out a way to win. They show signs of being a special team."
Xavier at Providence 7:00 PM ET
Providence looks like a team that could win the Big East when Kris Dunn is healthy and running the floor along with LaDontae Henton. The duo will try to lead the Friars to back-to-back wins when they host Xavier on Thursday. The Musketeers halted a two-game slide with a win over Marquette on Saturday but are winless in three Big East road games as they look for more from center Matt Stainbrook.
Alabama at Arkansas 7:00 PM ET
Two teams badly in need of a victory will be trying to end their respective two-game slides when Alabama visits Arkansas on Thursday in SEC play. The Crimson Tide have lost to South Carolina and Kentucky during their skid with the contest against the top-ranked Wildcats being much more one-sided than the 70-48 final score. The Razorbacks fell to Tennessee and Ole Miss in defeats that knocked them out of the Top 25 to follow up a seven-game winning streak.
N.C. State at Miami-Florida 8:00 PM ET
Miami (Fla.) and North Carolina State both have gone toe-to-toe with some of the nation's best teams over the last few weeks. The ACC rivals will square off Thursday in South Florida where two of the better backcourt rotations in the league will be on display. Both the Hurricanes and the Wolfpack are led by a trio of guards as their leading scorers with Miami's Sheldon McClellan (15.4 points) and N.C. State's Trevor Lacey (17.1) pacing their respective teams.
Georgia Tech at Virginia 8:00 PM ET
Time and time again en route to winning its first 17 games this season, Virginia has turned to its suffocating defense to lead the way. The second-ranked Cavaliers host Georgia Tech on Thursday looking to continue its strongest start since opening the 1980-81 campaign 23-0, and their 50.5 points per game allowed ranks second in the country. “You just see it in each other’s eyes,” guard Justin Anderson told reporters after the Cavaliers locked up Boston College in Saturday’s 66-51 victory.
UCLA at Oregon St. 9:00 PM ET
Oregon State hasn’t started 10-0 on its home floor since 1984 but will try to continue its winning ways when it hosts UCLA in a Pac-12 contest on Thursday. The Beavers also have defeated the Bruins in three straight meetings at Gill Coliseum but will facing a UCLA team that has won its last three games and has been idle since Jan. 14. Oregon State has been clamping down on teams early, holding its last four opponents to an average of 19 points in the first half.
Maryland at Indiana 9:00 PM ET
Two of the best freshman guards in the nation meet for the first time when eighth-ranked Maryland visits No. 23 Indiana on Thursday in a Big Ten contest. James Blackmon Jr. leads Indiana in scoring at 16.6 points per game and is draining 41.5 percent from 3-point range in his first season with the Hoosiers, who have won three straight. Fellow freshman Melo Trimble averages a team-best 16.1 points after scoring 24 as the Terrapins beat Michigan State on Saturday for their third consecutive win.
Arizona at Stanford 9:00 PM ET
Four days after knocking off the reigning national champions, No. 25 Stanford goes for another marquee victory when it hosts seventh-ranked Arizona on Thursday in a matchup of first-place teams in the Pac-12 Conference. The Cardinal have won seven of their last eight and stretched their winning streak to three games by dismantling Connecticut 72-59 on Saturday. However, the Wildcats have been a nemesis for Stanford, winning the past nine meetings.
Washington at Colorado 9:30 PM ET
It remains unclear whether Colorado's Josh Scott will be available when the Buffaloes host Washington on Thursday, but Xavier Johnson's status is certain - he will not play. Johnson missed the last two games because of an ankle injury and was sent home during last week's trip to face the Arizona schools because of an off-the-court incident, which earned him a one-game suspension from coach Tad Boyle. Scott has missed four of the last five contests due to back spasms.
Arizona St. at California 11:00 PM ET
California plays for the first time in eight days on Thursday against visiting Arizona State - and the rest came at an opportune time for Jabari Bird. The 6-6 sophomore guard, who has missed 10 of the last 12 games due to a foot injury, expects to be at full strength as Cal looks to snap its four-game losing streak. The teams are tied with USC for last in the Pac-12, but the Sun Devils are coming off an encouraging 78-72 win over Colorado on Saturday.
Southern California at Oregon 11:00 PM ET
Oregon scored 176 points on last week’s two-game northern road swing to play Washington State and Washington, but came home with a two-game losing streak. That’ll happen when the opposition shoots 54.8 percent from the field, including 22-of-39 from 3-point range and puts up 193 total points. So buckling down on defense is a priority for the Ducks heading into Thursday night’s home date with USC.
St. Mary's at Gonzaga 11:00 PM ET
The first of the two annual regular-season showdowns between visiting Saint Mary’s and No. 3 Gonzaga has even more of a big-game feel on Thursday with both teams still undefeated in West Coast Conference play. The Bulldogs have won 11 consecutive games since losing to Arizona on Dec. 6 and have dominated most of their seven WCC contests while the Gaels have put together nine straight victories. Gonzaga beat Loyola Marymount 72-55 on Saturday while Saint Mary’s defeated Brigham Young 82-77.
