Southern Methodist at Cincinnati 11:00 AM ET
SMU did nothing to dismiss the notion that it is one of the favorites to win the American Athletic Conference by opening league play with a resounding victory. The Mustangs hope to make another early statement against one of the conference's other top teams when they travel to Cincinnati on Saturday. SMU extended its longest winning streak in more than 17 years to eight games with Wednesday’s 83-49 rout of USF, racing out to a 34-point lead at halftime.
Villanova at Seton Hall 12:00 PM ET
Seton Hall will continue to lean on Sterling Gibbs when the Pirates host their second straight ranked Big East opponent in No. 5 Villanova on Saturday. Gibbs had 25 points against St. John's and has scored in double figures in 12 of the Pirates' 13 games this season. "I think he's playing at the level that I envisioned that he play at all the time," Pirates coach Kevin Willard said.
Pittsburgh at N.C. State 12:00 PM ET
North Carolina State enters Saturday’s ACC home game against Pittsburgh having lost three of its last five contests. The Wolfpack’s most recent outing – a 76-60 home loss to Cincinnati on Tuesday – had coach Mark Gottfried in a foul mood. “We've got some guys that need to understand it's a privilege to put the uniform on, (and) it's a privilege to walk out there in front of 17,000 fans,” Gottfried said during his post-game news conference.
Syracuse at Virginia Tech 12:00 PM ET
Syracuse and Virginia Tech endured their share of ups and downs throughout the non-conference portion of their schedules. On Saturday, the Orange visit the Hokies in the ACC opener for both schools. Syracuse has lost both of its road games - a tight setback at Michigan on Dec. 2 and an overtime loss on Villanova's home court 18 days later.
Minnesota at Maryland 12:00 PM ET
No. 11 Maryland attempts to extend its winning streak to seven in its first-ever Big Ten home game Saturday against offensively-gifted Minnesota. The Terrapins found a way to triumph at Michigan State 68-66 in double overtime Tuesday in its league debut despite shooting 33.3 percent from the field, and their only loss came against No. 3 Virginia. Minnesota averages 82 points, but saw its eight-game winning streak end by coughing up an 11-point lead in a 72-68 loss at Purdue on Wednesday.
Kansas St. at Oklahoma St. 12:00 PM ET
Oklahoma State looks to continue its winning ways when it hosts Kansas State on Saturday in the Big 12 opener for both teams. The Cowboys have won three out of their last four games - including a 74-72 overtime win over Missouri on Dec. 30 - and hope to begin conference play with a victory for the first time since 2012 after dropping two straight to the Wildcats. "It's momentum," senior forward Le'Bryan Nash told reporters. "It's a good way to come out of 2014 and a good way to go into 2015."
North Alabama at Auburn 1:00 PM ET
Auburn may have finally found what it has been lacking heading into SEC play, which follows Saturday's non-conference game against visiting North Alabama - a Division II program. Led by senior Antoine Mason, the nation's leading scorer a season ago, the Tigers put forth a solid defensive effort Monday to knock off Middle Tennessee State 64-48. "He challenged us, and he challenged me especially on defense," Mason told the media of coach Bruce Pearl.
Texas at Texas Tech 2:00 PM ET
After suffering a rare loss to Texas Tech in the most recent meeting, No. 10 Texas hopes to defeat its in-state rival Saturday when they match up on the Red Raiders' home court. The Longhorns last played here on March 8, when they dropped a 59-53 decision that ended an 11-game winning streak in the series. Texas had won 17 of the previous 19 against Texas Tech and fell to 30-4 against the Red Raiders during the Rick Barnes era.
Yale at Vanderbilt 2:00 PM ET
Sharp-shooting Vanderbilt ended the year with a bang by rolling over St. Louis on the road last time out. The Commodores, who ranked fifth in the nation in shooting percentage entering Friday, look for their third straight victory when they host Yale on Saturday afternoon. Explosive sophomore forward Damian Jones is off to a super start to the season - averaging 16.4 points and seven rebounds - and could present a tough matchup for the Bulldogs.
Providence at Marquette 2:00 PM ET
If the opening game was any indication, LaDontae Henton, who leads Providence into action Saturday at Marquette, is serving notice that he belonged on the preseason All-Big East first team. The senior scored 35 points as the Friars pushed their winning streak to five games with a 65-53 victory Wednesday against Creighton. "For him not to be a preseason Big East first team selection is a joke and I'm not going to let anyone forget it, especially him," Providence coach Ed Cooley told reporters.
Connecticut at Florida 2:00 PM ET
Defending national champion Connecticut visits Florida on Saturday in a 2014 Final Four rematch, but that seems an eon ago as the teams who have combined to win five of the last 11 NCAA Tournaments are a combined 13-10 this season. Neither the Huskies nor the Gators own a quality victory and are each 0-2 against Top 25 teams. Of immediate concern to UConn is the health of senior guard Ryan Boatright, who suffered a thigh contusion in the Huskies' 57-53 overtime loss to Temple on Wednesday.
Austin Peay at Mississippi 2:00 PM ET
Before heading into SEC play, Ole Miss has one more nonconference contest, a Saturday date with visiting Austin Peay. The Rebels are coming off a four-point loss at Dayton on Tuesday that was nearly a come-from-behind victory, with Ole Miss cutting a 10-point lead to just three with 15.5 seconds to play before falling short. The Governors have won three of four coming into this one, though they have yet to win a true road game, falling short in their first six attempts.
Norfolk State at Georgia 2:00 PM ET
Georgia is riding a five-game win streak heading into Saturday’s non-conference finale against visiting Norfolk State, and the last two victories have been confidence-building battles. The Bulldogs came out of the holiday break Dec. 27 to outlast visiting Mercer 86-77 in triple overtime and went on the road to beat Kansas State 50-46 on New Year’s Eve.
Xavier at DePaul 2:00 PM ET
For only the second time in 10 seasons and the first since 2008, DePaul won a Big East season opener. The Blue Demons now seek a second straight conference home victory for the first time since 2007-08 when Xavier visits Saturday. DePaul, picked for last in the Big East after finishing in the basement the previous six seasons, snapped a six-game overall losing streak with a surprising 61-58 victory over Marquette in its conference opener Wednesday.
Michigan at Purdue 2:15 PM ET
Michigan looks to stay on the winning track when it hits the road to face Purdue on Saturday. The Wolverines began the defense of their Big Ten title with a come-from-behind 73-65 overtime victory over Illinois on Tuesday and hope to make it two in a row in conference play by beating the Boilermakers for the fifth straight time. "It's always a grind no matter who you play in the Big Ten," coach John Beilein told reporters. "It is one of the best conference we have in the country."
Georgia Tech at Notre Dame 2:30 PM ET
Jerian Grant has made up for lost time after an academic issue sidelined him for the final 20 games of last season, and he is a big reason why No. 13 Notre Dame is one of the more intriguing teams in the nation. The Fighting Irish host Georgia Tech on Saturday riding a nine-game winning streak and leading the nation in field-goal percentage, and Grant leads the ACC in assists while ranking second in scoring. The Yellow Jackets open conference play having won six of eight.
Utah Valley at Arkansas 3:00 PM ET
Arkansas carries a four-game winning streak into its contest against visiting Utah Valley on Saturday in its final tuneup before beginning its SEC season. The Razorbacks try for their 26th consecutive non-conference victory at home and 52nd straight win at home over an unranked non-conference opponent after defeating Northwestern State 100-92 on Sunday. Arkansas prevailed behind the play of 6-11 sophomore Bobby Portis, who recorded 22 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.
Illinois at Ohio St. 3:30 PM ET
Ohio State hasn't lost two straight home games since February 2008, a fate the 18th-ranked Buckeyes hope to avoid when they host Illinois in a Big Ten matchup Saturday. The Fighting Illini are after their first win over a ranked opponent in three attempts this season and their first road win of the campaign, but they've won their last two Big Ten road games against top-25 teams. The Buckeyes have won three straight meetings overall and five in a row at home dating to 2009.
Baylor at Oklahoma 4:00 PM ET
The Big 12 is absolutely loaded with six teams ranked in the top 25 heading into the first weekend of conference play, including No. 21 Oklahoma and No. 22 Baylor. Both teams will get an early look at how they stack up against the rest of the conference when the Sooners host the Bears on Saturday. Baylor has won six straight since suffering its only loss while Oklahoma comes in on the strength of back-to-back victories.
Butler at St. John's 4:00 PM ET
No. 17 St. John’s saw its longest winning streak since 1999-2000 come to an end in its Big East opener and looks to start over when Butler visits Saturday. Red Storm coach Steve Lavin told reporters he was disappointed in his team’s defensive breakdowns in the 78-67 loss at Seton Hall on Wednesday and a veteran Butler squad could be more difficult test. Chris Holtmann was promoted from interim to Butler’s head coach Friday to officially replace Brandon Miller, who was away on medical leave.
Boston College at Duke 4:00 PM ET
After it barely was tested in a dominant non-conference run, No. 2 Duke begins ACC play Saturday at home against Boston College. The Blue Devils' 84-55 rout of Wofford on New Year's Eve gave them 12 straight double-digit wins to start the year, which is one shy of the program's longest such streak accomplished in 1999. Jahlil Okafor scored 24 points and fellow freshman Justise Winslow added 16 in the rout of the Terriers on Wednesday as Duke looks primed for its first foray into conference actio
West Virginia at Texas Christian 4:00 PM ET
While optimistic entering the season after a dismal 2013-14 campaign, even TCU coach Trent Johnson couldn't have predicted the early-season success his team has had this season. The unbeaten Horned Frogs now seek to snap a 19-game Big 12 Conference losing streak when No. 15 West Virginia visits Saturday in the league opener for both teams.
Creighton at Georgetown 4:30 PM ET
Neither Creighton nor Georgetown can afford to start Big East play at 0-2, so there is a sense of urgency surrounding both teams – and the need to shoot better – when the Hoyas host the Blue Jays on Saturday. Creighton shot 35.8 percent from the field in Wednesday’s 65-53 loss to Providence, while Georgetown made 36.2 percent of its attempts in Wednesday’s 70-53 defeat at Xavier. Creighton’s Austin Chatman and Georgetown’s D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera lead their teams in scoring.
Lipscomb at Missouri 5:00 PM ET
An improving Missouri team has its final tune-up before beginning SEC play when the Tigers host Lipscomb on Saturday. Missouri has lost three straight, but first-year coach Kim Anderson's young team has improved of late, with the last two defeats coming by a combined five points against Illinois and Oklahoma State. The Bisons, who have lost three of their last four, were defeated 89-69 in their only previous trip to Missouri in November 2006.
Hartford at Texas A&M 5:00 PM ET
Texas A&M will get its final tune-up prior to the start of SEC play when it hosts Hartford on Saturday. The Aggies have alternated wins and losses over the last five games but put together one of their best defensive performances in a win over Mercer on Tuesday to remain unbeaten at home. The Hawks are playing the second of back-to-back road games against power conference teams before getting back into America East action.
Virginia at Miami-Florida 5:30 PM ET
Looking to remain unbeaten, No. 3 Virginia pays a visit to Miami (Fla.) on Saturday in the ACC opener for both teams. The Cavaliers are among the hottest teams in the nation with 30 wins in their last 32 games, dating back to last season. After a scare against Davidson last time out when Virginia rallied to win despite trailing at halftime, forward Anthony Gill labeled the experience a positive, telling reporters, "To go out there and have to fight and scratch and dig for a win was good."
South Carolina at Iowa St. 6:00 PM ET
Iowa State is making its way up the rankings on the strength of its offense as it gets ready for Big 12 play. The ninth-ranked Cyclones will try to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule strong when they take on South Carolina in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Saturday. The Gamecocks already posted one convincing victory over a Big 12 team during its six-game winning streak as it prepares for SEC action.
Tulane at Memphis 6:00 PM ET
Memphis wraps up a long homestand and looks to get an early leg up in the AAC standings when it hosts league newcomer Tulane on Saturday. The Tigers have won five straight following a 73-54 triumph over Houston on Wednesday in the conference opener for both teams - improving to 6-2 on their long stay at FedExForum, which ends after Tulane's visit. After struggling to score against stiffer competition early in the season, Memphis has averaged 78.6 points during the winning streak.
Savannah State at Louisiana State 7:00 PM ET
LSU rings in the new year with a home game against Savannah State on Saturday in a battle of Tigers. LSU coach Johnny Jones has guided his team to a seven-game winning streak and an undefeated record at Pete Maravich Assembly Center (7-0). LSU will be playing its final non-conference opponent before starting SEC play at Missouri on Thursday.
East Carolina at South Florida 7:00 PM ET
Both teams will be looking for their first victory in American Athletic Conference play when East Carolina visits USF on Saturday. East Carolina was done in by one big run against Tulane on Wednesday, falling 67-59 in its AAC debut, and Pirates coach Jeff Lebo recognized a key weakness in the loss that his team must improve on as league play continues. "We didn't get much (production) inside at all during the game," Lebo told reporters. "That's going to be an issue for us."
Penn St. at Rutgers 7:30 PM ET
Penn State looks to improve on its best start since 1995-96 and gain win number one in Big Ten play as it visits Rutgers on Saturday. The Nittany Lions must tighten up defensively after allowing 63.8 percent shooting in Wednesday’s 89-72 loss at No. 4 Wisconsin in their league opener and face a Rutgers squad that has struggled on the offensive end all season. The Scarlet Knights average only 59.5 points after dropping its first-ever Big Ten contest 51-47 to Northwestern at home Tuesday.
Oregon St. at Oregon 8:00 PM ET
Bitter rivals look to open Pac-12 play with a victory when Oregon State visits Oregon on Saturday. The Ducks have won five straight games and are starting to come together with a cast of characters who spent most of the nonconference slate learning how to play with one another. The Beavers have won six of their past seven games and have been spearheaded by the all-around solid production of guard Gary Payton II, son of the former NBA star.
Colorado St. at New Mexico 8:00 PM ET
No. 24 Colorado State puts the nation's longest winning streak on the line when it visits New Mexico on Saturday. The Rams are off to the best start in school history at 14-0 and opened the Mountain West Conference portion of their schedule with a home win against Boise State last time out. Colorado State, however, has struggled mightily in Albuquerque, losing 44 of their 49 contests at the Lobos' den.
North Carolina at Clemson 8:15 PM ET
No. 20 North Carolina, which has won four games in a row since an 84-70 loss at No. 1 Kentucky on Dec. 13, travels to Clemson on Saturday in the ACC opener for both schools. The Tar Heels are looking for their sixth win in their last seven trips to Clemson and defeated the Tigers 80-61 in the only meeting last season in Chapel Hill. It marks the start of a three-game stretch to open ACC play for the Tar Heels, who return home to host No. 13 Notre Dame on Monday and No. 6 Louisville on Jan. 10.
Gonzaga at Portland 9:30 PM ET
Eighth-ranked Gonzaga looks to complete a three-game road sweep of West Coast Conference foes when it visits Portland on Saturday. The Bulldogs are off to a phenomenal start, having suffered only one setback - a 66-63 overtime loss to No. 7 Arizona on Dec. 6. Mark Few's team owned the third-best field goal percentage in the nation entering Friday at 52.5 and the 13th-most points per game with 82.2.
San Diego St. at Fresno St. 10:00 PM ET
No. 25 San Diego State, which has dropped its two previous road games at Washington (49-36) and Cincinnati (71-62), hits the road for the first time in Mountain West Conference play when its travels to Fresno State on Saturday night. The Aztecs have played their last two games without all-Mountain West swingman Dwayne Polee II, who passed out and fell face first to the court during a Dec. 22 win over UC Riverside and is out indefinitely while undergoing medical tests.
