Running back Matt Dayes had several big runs as North Carolina State scored 28 first-quarter points on the way to a 35-17 romp past host Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Dayes rushed for first-quarter touchdowns from 85 and 57 yards as the Wolfpack was on the way to their first road victory in this annual series since 2001. Dayes ended up with 205 rushing yards on 16 carries.

It was an ideal outing for N.C. State (5-2, 1-2 ACC) before its home showdown next week with undefeated Clemson.

The Wolfpack, who racked up 322 yards of total offense in the first quarter, held a 14-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. The first points came 53 seconds into the game when quarterback Jacoby Brissett broke away from a would-be sack and threw 59 yards to wide receiver Maurice Trowell for a touchdown.

Brissett later threw for 58 yards to wide receiver Nyheim Hines. Brissett finished 20 of 34 for 227 passing yards.

Backup quarterback Kendall Hinton ran 69 yards for a second-quarter touchdown for Wake Forest (3-5, 1-4). He also scored on a 1-yard run with 44 seconds remaining.

Trailing 28-10, the Demon Deacons threatened midway through the fourth quarter before turning the ball over on downs after crossing midfield.

N.C. State rebuilt its lead on wide receiver Bra'Lon Cherry's 52-yard punt return with 4:30 left.
