The Blue Devils started strong with 10 first-quarter points. Senior kicker Ross Martin booted a 40-yard field goal less than four minutes into the contest and Sirk tossed a 9-yard scoring pass to junior tight end Erich Schneider with 1:11 remaining in the quarter.

Boehme, the goal-line quarterback, tacked on a 3-yard touchdown run to make it 17-0 with 11:01 left in the first half. Duncan broke loose on a 43-yard scoring jaunt with 6:18 to play and Martin added a 25-yard field goal with six seconds remaining to give Duke a 27-0 halftime lead.
