No. 12 UCLA 20, Texas 17: Sophomore Jerry Neuheisel, subbing for an injured Brett Hundley, threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Payton with three minutes left in the fourth quarter as the Bruins came back and edged the Longhorns at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Neuheisel, the son of former Bruins coach Rick Neuheisel, completed 23-of-30 passes for 178 yards and the first two TDs of his career. He found Payton down the left sideline on a stop-and-go pattern just two minutes after John Harris caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Tyrone Swoopes that gave the Longhorns a 17-13 lead.

Swoopes, in just his second career start, completed his first 11 passes and finished 24-of-34 for 196 yards and two TDs for Texas (1-2). Hundley, the Heisman Trophy hopeful who threw for 396 yards and three touchdowns last week against Tulsa while tying a school record with 33 completions, left midway through the Bruins’ second drive with an elbow injury after completing all four of his passes.

Paul Perkins (24 carries for 126 yards) gained 58 yards up the middle on the first play of the second half, setting up Neuheisel’s first career TD pass - a 3-yarder to Nate Iese for a 10-10 tie early in the third quarter.

With Hundley on the sideline getting his elbow checked out, Ka’imi Fairbairn kicked a 47-yard field goal in the final minute of the first quarter before Texas responded on its next possession with a 33-yarder by Nick Rose. Swoopes then capped a 14-play, 62-yard drive by finding M.J. McFarland wide open in the right corner of the end zone on a play-action pass for a 2-yard TD.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Before leaving with the injury, Hundley had 31- and 44-yard completions called back by penalties on his first two drives. … The QBs for both teams combined to complete their first 14 passes until an incompletion with 10 minutes left in the first half. … UCLA ended up starting each half with the ball after winning the coin toss, deferring to the second half and the Longhorns mistakenly choosing to kick off.
