After conceding two early field goals, the Red Raiders tied the game at six on Stockton's 75-yard burst in the opening minute of the second quarter, and Ryan Bustin's 28-yard field goal pushed the lead to three. Jones responded for the Miners with a 19-yard touchdown run before Texas Tech was back on top 16-13 at intermission after Webb connected with Marquez for an 11-yard score.

The Red Raiders and Miners traded scores in the final two periods, but a missed PAT following Laufasa's 24-yard scamper in the third quarter gave Texas Tech the four-point cushion it needed. Texas Tech drove 75 yards in seven plays for the go-ahead score by Marquez on a 9-yard hook-up from Webb and the Texas Tech defense forced a four-and-out on Texas-El Paso's final drive.
