Cincinnati’s swarming defense forced three first-half turnovers as the host Bearcats padded their national lead in turnover margin and whipped North Carolina State 44-14 on Thursday.

The Bearcats (3-1) led 21-0 just over 18 minutes in. Isaiah Pead ran for more than 150 yards in three quarters, and quarterback Zach Collaros ran for two touchdowns and threw for another.

The feeding frenzy began when safety Drew Frey intercepted a wobbler from N.C. State's Mike Glennon. Then linebacker J.K. Schaffer read Glennon’s eyes and cut off a short route for the second pick of the first quarter. In the second quarter, defensive back Wesley Richardson laid a brutal hit on N.C. State wideout T.J. Graham, who fumbled.

The Bearcats entered the game with a plus-12 turnover margin after finishing minus-15 last season. They improved to plus-14, committing just one turnover.

Cincinnati avenged last year’s loss in Raleigh, when the Wolfpack built a 30-7 lead and won 30-19.

Tony Miliano kicked a career-long 48-yard field goal to extend Cincinnati’s lead to 27-7 in the third quarter.

N.C. State (2-2), which was missing several injured defenders, had no answer for Pead, who took a screen 25 yards to make it 34-7.

Glennon and Graham hooked up for 87- and 49-yard touchdown catches for N.C. State's only scores.
