Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez made the right decision.

Leaving his choice for a starting quarterback until gametime, Rodriguez tabbed sophomore Denard Robinson, who responded with 386 yards of total offense to lead the Wolverines to a 30-10 victory over Connecticut in the season opener.

Robinson looked very comfortable running Rodriguez's spread offense as Michigan shredded the Huskies for 473 yards.

Michigan jumped out to a 21-0 lead on rushing touchdowns by Vincent Smith, Robinson and Michael Shaw. Smith opened the scoring with a 12-yard jaunt midway through the first quarter and Robinson made it 14-0 with a 32-yard scoring run with 1:35 left. Shaw scored on a three-yard run early in the second, then Connecticut finally woke up.

The Huskies made a game of it by scoring the final 10 points of the half. Dave Teggart kicked a 32-yard field goal and Jordan Todman rushed up the middle for a two-yard touchdown to give Connecticut some hope.

The Wolverines clamped down in the second half, shutting out the Huskies over the final two quarters while Robinson put an exclamation point on his standout performance. His 11-yard touchdown pass to Smith with 13:20 left capped the scoring.

Robinson, who wasn't known as a passer, completed 19-of-22 throws for 188 yards and a touchdown and added 198 yards and a score on 29 carries.

For Connecticut, Todman finished with 105 yards on 20 carries and Zach Frazer completed 18-of-38 passes for 204 yards. The Huskies were just 4-of-15 on third down conversions while Michigan converted 14 of 19.
