Justin Fields threw for 318 yards and four touchdowns and No. 3 Ohio State defeated No. 18 Penn State 38-25 at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pa., on Saturday.
Fields' second TD pass to tight end Jeremy Ruckert, on a fourth-and-1, extended the Ohio State lead to 38-19 with 9:14 left before Penn State wide receiver Jahan Dotson had his third TD catch, a 20-yarder, for the final score.
Fields finished 28 of 34 for the Buckeyes (2-0, 2-0 Big Ten). Chris Olave had seven catches for 120 yards and two TDs, Ruckert had the two touchdown catches and Garrett Wilson had 111 receiving yards on 11 catches and 62 more yards on the ground. Master Teague rushed for 110 yards and a TD on 23 carries.
Dotson made eight catches for 144 yards and Sean Clifford, after passing for 29 yards in the first half, finished 18 of 30 for 281 yards, three TDS and an interception for Penn State (0-2, 0-2).
Ohio State had a 21-6 halftime lead after scoring on its first two possessions.
Teague ran for a 4-yard TD and Fields had a 26-yard TD pass to Olave 8:39 into the game.
Fields, who was 20 for 21 for 276 yards and two TDs in the season opener vs. Nebraska, completed his first seven passes for 81 yards.
The first half ended on a bizarre note when with two seconds left, Fields took a knee on fourth down for a 3-yard loss to the OSU 33 and the teams exited the field, only to have a review put one second on the clock.
Penn State long kicker Jordan Stout hit a 50-yard field goal as time expired to make it 21-6. The Nittany Lions got the ball to start the second half and Clifford's TD pass to Dotson made it 21-13.
OSU countered with 10 straight points for a 31-13 lead after three quarters.
Fields found Olave again down the left sideline to cap a 75-yard drive and Dominic DiMaccio made a 22-yard field goal before Dotson had a highlight 21-yard TD catch early in the fourth quarter to make it 31-19 after a failed two-point try.
