Sophomore quarterback Mike Penix Jr. scored the game-winning points on a two-yard run on a two-point conversion in overtime, rallying Indiana to a 36-35 upset of No. 8 Penn State at Bloomington, Ind.

It was Indiana's first win over a Top 10 team since beating No. 9 Ohio State 31-10 on Oct. 10, 1987.

With Indiana down 28-20 with less than two minutes to go in regulation, Penix drove the Hoosiers (1-0, 1-0 Big Ten) 75 yards and scored the game-tying touchdown and two-point conversion with 22 seconds left.

After Indiana flubbed a squib kick, Penn State had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but a 57-yard field goal attempt by kicker Jordan Stout fell short.

Sean Clifford started the overtime period with a 9-yard TD pass to wide receiver Parker Washington and Penn State added the extra point to go up 35-28.

That set the stage for Penix, who threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Whop Philyor to cut Penn State's lead to 35-34. Indiana coach Tom Allen then chose to go for two points, and Penix scrambled and hit the pylon with the ball to secure the win.

Clifford passed for 238 yards and three touchdowns for Penn State (0-1, 0-1), rallying the Nittany Lions from down 10 points in the second half.

A Clifford 35-yard touchdown run to end the third quarter cut Indiana's lead to 17-14, then Clifford connected with receiver Jahan Dotson on a 60-yard TD pass to put Penn State up 21-20 with 2:30 remaining. After Indiana turned the ball over on downs, Penn State went up 28-20 with 1:42 left on a 14-yard TD run by Devyn Ford.

Indiana took a 17-7 lead into halftime, cashing in 10 points off a pair of Clifford interceptions in the first half. The Hoosiers converted on a 34-yard field goal off a Jaylin Williams interception, cutting Penn State's lead to 7-3.

Then, after a 14-yard Stevie Scott III touchdown run put IU up 10-7 with 8:12 left in the second quarter, safety Jamar Johnson intercepted a Clifford pass and returned it 18 yards down to Penn State's 4-yard line. Two plays later, Scott scored on a 2-yard touchdown run, extending Indiana's lead to 17-7.

Penn State jumped to an early 7-0 lead, driving 64 yards on 13 plays to open the game, capped by a fourth down 2-yard TD pass from Clifford to tight end Pat Freiermuth.

The Nittany Lions had a chance to cut into Indiana's lead before halftime, but backup quarterback Will Levis lost a fumble at Indiana's 7-yard line, Penn State's third fumble of the first half.

Penn State safety Lamont Wade recovered a Scott fumble with two seconds left in the first half at Indiana's 7-yard line, but kicker Jake Pinegar's 24-yard field goal attempt bounded off the left upright, allowing the Hoosiers to stay up 17-7.
