Tommy DeVito threw for two touchdowns and Sean Tucker ran for two first-quarter scores to lift Syracuse to a 37-20 win over visiting Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon.

The victory allowed the Orange (1-2, 1-2 ACC) to avoid losing their first three games of the season for the first time since 2012.

The start was delayed 30 minutes to reconfirm negative COVID-19 test results for three Syracuse players, the school said in a statement.

Georgia Tech (1-2, 1-1) fell behind 17-0 in the first quarter and did not get closer than three points.

Georgia Tech's Jeff Sims was intercepted for the fourth time with his team trailing 30-20. Ja'Had Carter got the pick, but he lateraled to Trill Williams and he ran for the score with 8:10 left in the game.

DeVito was 13 for 24 for 194 yards and an interception; Tucker had 112 yards on 24 carries and Nykeim Johnson had four catches for 87 yards and a touchdown.

Sims, a freshman, completed 13 of 28 for 174 yards and one touchdown.

Jahmyr Gibbs had 105 yards on the ground for the Yellow Jackets, who had 15 penalties for 104 yards.

Syracuse quickly answered after Georgia Tech pulled to within 23-20 with 1:29 left in the third quarter on a 3-yard run by Jamious Griffin.

The Orange made it 30-20 just 49 seconds later when DeVito found Johnson for 43 yards down the middle.

Turnovers continued to plague Georgia Tech, which had five in 49-21 loss to Central Florida on Sept. 19. Sims threw two interceptions in the first quarter that led to 10 of the Orange's 17 points.

Sims settled down and had a 24-yard scoring strike to Gibbs and a 1-yard running touchdown that sandwiched DeVito's 46-yard scoring pass to Taj Harris.
