Ian Book threw two touchdown passes to Chase Claypool on Saturday afternoon as No. 16 Notre Dame overcame slick conditions on the road to score 31 consecutive points in a 45-24 nonconference victory over host Stanford.

The Fighting Irish (10-2) earned a 10th victory for the third consecutive season -- their first such streak since 1991-93 -- and a shot at a New Year's Six bowl game, thanks in large part to a blocked punt by Isaiah Foskey that turned the tide in the second quarter after Stanford had taken a 17-7 lead.

Notre Dame cashed in three plays later when Book threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Tommy Tremble, and the visitors went on to seize a 21-17 halftime lead less than two minutes later. Book found Claypool for the first of his two scores, a 41-yard connection 1:20 before the break.

In winning at Stanford for the first time since 2007, the Fighting Irish dominated the second half, holding the Cardinal scoreless until a 9-yard touchdown run by Cameron Scarlett with 1:54 to go.

Notre Dame put a bow on the win when Adetokunbo Ogundeji sacked Stanford quarterback Davis Mills, forcing a fumble that Khalid Kareem recovered in the end zone for a touchdown, capping the game's scoring with 41 seconds left.

Before the late scoring, Notre Dame had taken control and a 38-17 lead, getting an 8-yard TD pass from Book to Claypool in the third quarter, a 42-yard field goal by Jonathan Doerer early in the fourth and a 1-yard touchdown plunge by C'Bo Flemister with 5:10 to go.

Book finished 17-for-30 for 255 yards and four touchdowns, the first coming on a 16-yard pass to Tony Jones Jr. in the first quarter.

Mills built up similar yardage, going 28-for-46 for 276 yards and two touchdowns.

Mills' TD passes covered 5 yards to Brycen Tremayne to cap the game's first possession and 27 yards to Michael Wilson for a 17-7 lead early in the second period.

Wilson was the game's leading receiver with 10 catches for 96 yards for Stanford (4-8), which completed its season without a bowl bid for the first time in 11 years.

The eight-loss season was Stanford's first since 2007.

Cole Kmet was Notre Dame's leading receiver with five catches for 77 yards. The Fighting Irish's Jones was the game's leading rusher with 50 yards on 14 carries.
