Nate Stanley passed for 173 yards and two touchdowns, and freshman Tyler Goodson rushed for 94 yards and one touchdown in his first start as No. 20 Iowa knocked No. 8 Minnesota from the unbeaten ranks with a 23-19 Big Ten victory Saturday in Iowa City.

The Hawkeyes (7-3, 4-3) scored touchdowns on their first three possessions for a quick 20-3 lead, then used their top-20 defense to hold off a late charge led by Gophers quarterback Tanner Morgan, who passed for 368 yards and a touchdown.

Minnesota's Rodney Smith scored on a 1-yard run with 3:27 remaining, but freshman Brock Walker's extra-point attempt was wide left to keep the score 23-19.

Iowa recovered the ensuing onside kick but was forced to punt, and the Gophers took over on their own 20-yard line with 1:52 remaining. Morgan was sacked on the first two plays, and was forced to leave the game with an apparent left leg injury after the second. Cole Kramer entered and threw an incomplete pass, and then was intercepted on fourth-and-21 with 46 seconds remaining.

Iowa's Keith Duncan had given the Hawkeyes a 23-13 lead on a 27-yard field goal with 7:13 left.

Minnesota (9-1, 6-1) had been one of five remaining FBS unbeatens and had won its last 11 games, tied with Baylor for the third-longest active streak behind Clemson (25) and Ohio State (15). The Gophers can still clinch the Big Ten West division title with a victory over Northwestern and a Wisconsin loss to Purdue next week. Minnesota hosts Wisconsin in the regular-season finale Nov. 30.

Iowa beat Minnesota for the fifth straight time, and beat a ranked team for the first time in four tries this season after losing to Michigan, Penn State and Wisconsin by a total of 14 points.

Minnesota, whose quarterbacks were sacked six times, had scored at least four touchdowns in every previous game this season.

Tyler Johnson had nine receptions for 170 yards and a touchdown for the Gophers, and his 28-yard scoring catch closed the deficit to 20-13 on the first drive of the third quarter.

Iowa drove 75, 68 and 69 yards to take a 20-3 lead with 6:20 remaining in the first half. Stanley completed 21- and 5-yard touchdown passes to Nico Ragaini and Ihmir Smith-Marsette, sandwiched around a 10-yard run by Goodson.

Minnesota reached the Iowa 6-yard line before settling for Walker's 24-yard field goal, which made it 13-3 early in the second quarter. The Gophers had scored a touchdown on all 19 previous possessions inside an opponents' 10. Walker's 20-yarder made it 20-6 at half.
