Jamie Newman threw two touchdown passes and Wake Forest came up with a defensive stand in the final minute to remain unbeaten by holding on for a 27-24 victory over Boston College on Saturday in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Wake Forest (1-0 ACC) improved to 5-0 for the first time since 2006 and fourth time overall by riding Newman's arm and legs, along with a dominant showing on third down. The Demon Deacons also tied the 1944 school record by winning their seventh straight game overall, dating to last season.

Boston College (3-2, 1-1) never led and lost for the second time in three games despite getting a big day from AJ Dillon, who rushed for 159 yards on 23 attempts.

Newman completed 21 of 33 passes for 243 yards. He also rushed for a career-high 102 yards on 23 attempts on a day in which the Demon Deacons converted 17 of 24 third downs, allowing them to maintain possession for 35:51.

Newman connected with Sage Surratt on a 6-yard TD pass in the second quarter and Scotty Washington on a 27-yard strike with 9:47 left in the fourth.

Washington's one-handed grab gave Wake Forest a 27-17 lead, but a little over three minutes later Chris Garrison caught a 16-yard TD from running back David Bailey to get Boston College within 27-24.

Newman then converted three third downs on Wake Forest's next drive and forced Boston College to use all three timeouts. Wake Forest pinned Boston College at its 5-yard line with 28 seconds left, and the Eagles got to their 26 before the game ended when quarterback Anthony Brown's lateral attempt to Garrison went out of bounds

Brown completed 21 of 29 passes for 268 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Wake Forest took a 10-0 lead in the opening quarter on Cade Carney's 5-yard run at the 8:47 mark and Nick Sciba's 22-yard field goal with 2:13 left.

After going scoreless in a first quarter for the first time this season, Boston College tied the game on Aaron Boumerhi's 22-yard field goal with 12:56 left and Zay Flowers' 26-yard reception a little over four minutes later.

Wake Forest regained the lead on Surratt's one-handed grab with 3:14 left in the half, but the Eagles evened the game at 17 on Bailey's 4-yard reception with 41 seconds to go.

Wake Forest took a 20-17 lead on Sciba's second 22-yard field goal with 4:47 left in the third.

The Eagles missed a chance at tying the game at 20 when they botched the snap on a 48-yard field goal attempt early in the fourth.
