BOXSCORE | RECAP
Stanford 31, Oregon State 28
When: 7:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 28, 2019
Where: Reser Stadium, Corvallis, Oregon
Temperature: 57°
Head Official: Matt Richards
Attendance: 32326

Jet Toner's 39-yard field goal with one second left ended Stanford's three-game losing streak and gave Stanford its first Pac-12 Conference win, 31-28 at Oregon State in Corvallis on Saturday.

The Cardinal (2-3, 1-2) -- playing without starting quarterback K.J. Costello -- pulled ahead 21-0 in the third quarter on backup quarterback Davis Mills' third touchdown pass of the game. His scores went to three different targets: 26 yards to Michael Wilson in the first quarter, 3 yards to Colby Parkinson in the second quarter, and another 3-yarder to Brycen Tremayne.

But beginning with an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jake Luton to wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins late in the third quarter, Oregon State (1-3, 0-1) mounted a raucous rally.

Running back Artavis Pierce gained 43 of his game-high 141 rushing yards on a touchdown run in the early fourth quarter, bringing the Beavers within a score at rain-soaked Reser Stadium.

Stanford responded on Mills' fourth touchdown, only this time he was on the receiving end. Mills made a spectacular, jumping catch from Parkinson on a double-reverse, a spin on the Philly Special the Philadelphia Eagles ran in the Super Bowl LII.

The Cardinal's two-score cushion evaporated on Oregon State drives of 75 and 77 yards, ending in 1-yard touchdown runs by B.J. Baylor and Pierce.

A 43-yard kickoff return by Connor Wedington set the stage for Stanford's final drive. Mills broke a 16-yard rush, the key play in a possession capped by Toner's field goal.

Mills finished with 245 yards passing in his second career start. He filled in for Costello in Week 2 at USC when Costello was in concussion protocol. Costello was announced as a scratch for Oregon State on Friday due to a hand injury.

Luton passed for 337 yards, completing 27 of 39 passes. The Beavers fell just short of their first home conference win since November 2016.
