No. 13 Texas A&M 73, Lamar 3: Kenny Hill threw four touchdown passes in 2 1/2 quarters as the host Aggies throttled the Cardinals in front of the largest crowd to see a college football game in the state of Texas.
A boisterous throng of 104,278 at the newly renovated Kyle Field watched Hill cruise for Texas A&M (2-0) in an impressive follow-up to his school-record 511-yard performance in the season opener. Hill went 17-of-26 for 283 yards, while James White added a pair of short touchdown runs in a game that was delayed more than two hours prior to kickoff due to lightning in the area.
Caleb Berry went 16-of-42 for 153 yards and an interception for Lamar (1-1), which was outgained 630-243. Michael Handy led the aerial attack with five receptions for 62 yards for the Cardinals.
The Aggies came out hot following the delay, jumping in front on Trey Williams’ 33-yard touchdown run on their third play. Hill took over from there, connecting with Ricky Seals-Jones on a 24-yard TD strike before rolling out to his left and hitting Sabian Holmes, who blazed untouched down the left sideline for a 51-yard score.
Hill’s third TD pass of the game - a nine-yard strike to Edward Pope - made it 31-3 near the midway point of the second quarter, and he added a fourth on the opening drive of the second half. White tacked on a 1-yard scoring run near the midway point of the third quarter and a 3-yard plunge early in the fourth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: According to Texas A&M, the former state attendance record for a college football game was 101,851, set in 2012 when Texas hosted West Virginia. … Kyle Allen was solid in relief of Hill, throwing for 122 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. … Hill has seven touchdown passes through two games, one more than 2013 starter Johnny Manziel had over the same time period.
