Arkansas 24, Southern Mississippi 3: Alex Collins and Jonathan Williams combined for 231 rushing yards, and the Razorback defense did the rest in the non-conference victory over Golden Eagles.
The victory could prove a costly one for the Arkansas (3-0), which lost sophomore quarterback Brandon Allen in the first quarter due to a right shoulder injury suffered on a 5-yard touchdown run. A.J. Derby, a walk-on and junior college transfer, came on and and attempted just two passes in the first half.
Allan Bridgford completed 17-of-33 passes for 133 yards but was intercepted twice for Southern Mississippi (0-3), which was held to 254 yards in total offense and suffered its 15th straight loss.
Allen capped a 12-play, 89-yard drivewith a 5-yard run to open the scoring as Arkansas averted an upset for the second straight week. Corey Acosta booted a 27-yard field goal for the only score for the Golden Eagles and Zach Hocker answered with a 42-yard field goal to give Arkansas a 10-3 halftime lead.
Williams, who had 16 carries for 116 yards, made it 17-3 when he busted through the line and won a foot race for a 45-yard score; and Collins, who had 115 yards on 25 attempts, capped the scoring with a 7-yard TD run. Allen finished 2-of-5 for 33 yards and an interception, and Derby was 4-of-6 for 36 yards for the Razorbacks, who play their first road game at Rutgers next week.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Hocker, who hit a career-long 53-yard field goal a week ago, now has 309 points and 53 made field goals in his career. ... Chris Smith had three sacks, including two on successive plays in the final minute of the first half to deny the Golden Eagles a scoring chance. ... Sam Irwin-Hill averaged 45.3 yards on three punts for Arkansas.
