Miami 30, Virginia Tech 12: Stephen Morris threw a pair of touchdown passes and Duke Johnson recorded 217 all-purpose yards as the host Hurricanes snapped a three-game losing streak.

Morris connected with Allen Hurns and Mike James for 16-yard scoring strikes in the first quarter and the Hurricanes (5-4, 4-2 ACC), ranked 98th in the nation in scoring defense, shut Virginia Tech out in the second half. The Hokies, who have lost four of five games, fumbled inside the Miami 5-yard line in the third quarter.

Virginia Tech (4-5, 2-3) held Miami to just three yards in the first 16:14 of the second half, but the Hurricanes put together a 69-yard drive in eight plays, capped by a 7-yard touchdown run by Johnson for a 27-12 lead. Johnson, a freshman, had 99 yards rushing.

Miami, which took over first place in the ACC Coastal division, turned an 81-yard kickoff return by Johnson and a blocked punt into a pair of two-play touchdown drives in the first quarter for a 14-3 lead. Morris’ touchdown passes to Hurns and James gave him 12 for the season. Morris threw for 170 yards.

Logan Thomas took a quarterback draw 73 yards for a score 4:21 into the second quarter and Cody Journell’s 20-yard field goal in the final seconds brought Virginia Tech within 20-12 at halftime. Thomas finished with a career-high 124 yards on 22 carries, but had two interceptions and a fumble.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Thomas’ rushing touchdown was the 17th of his career, moving him past Michael Vick (16) into third on Tech’s all-time list for quarterbacks. … Journell had made 12 consecutive field goals before a miss from 47 yards late in the third quarter. … Miami leads the series 18-12.
