No. 21 Rutgers 19, Connecticut 3: Jawan Jamison rushed for over 100 yards for his sixth straight game and Rutgers continued its strong play on defense to defeat the visiting Huskies.
Jamison equaled Ray Rice’s school record of five straight 100-yard games to start a season, totaling 110 against the Huskies. The Scarlet Knights (5-0, 2-0 Big East), who have allowed just 54 points in five games, picked off four passes and Wayne Warren returned one for a score in the fourth quarter.
Quarterback Gary Nova connected with Mark Harrison, who broke two arm tackles and scored from 14 yards with 9:09 left in the third quarter to give the Knights a 13-3 lead. Brandon Coleman caught six passes for 71 yards to lead Rutgers.
UConn rushing leader Lyle McCombs sat out the first quarter for disciplinary reasons, reportedly due to an arrest Friday for second degree breach of peace. He rushed for just 32 yards.
Rutgers capitalized on a pair of turnovers by the Huskies (3-3, 0-1) in the first quarter with field goals of 45 and 31 yards by Kyle Federico to take a 6-0 lead. UConn blocked its first field-goal attempt since September of 2004 and drove 45 yards to set up Chad Christen’s 19-yard field goal with 2:39 left in the second quarter to close within 6-3 at halftime.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Rutgers leads the series 22-10, winning six of nine in Big East play. … Rutgers improved to 5-0 for the seventh time in the program’s 143 years. … UConn recorded 16 sacks in its first five games, but had just one against Rutgers.
