Duke 54, North Carolina Central 17: Senior quarterback Sean Renfree completed 24 of 34 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns in a little over three quarters to lead the Blue Devils past the Eagles in the Bull City Gridiron Classic.
Renfree had touchdown passes of 33 yards to wide receiver Jamison Crowder, 18 yards to running back Josh Snead and 54 yards to sophomore tight end Issac Blakeney as Duke (2-1) built up leads of 27-10 at halftime and 41-10 after three quarters.
Renfree now has 7,116 career passing yards to move tnto 25th place in ACC history, passing Florida State's Christian Ponder (6,872) and Virginia Tech's Tyrod Taylor (7,017) in the process.
Junior cornerback Ross Cockrell had two interceptions for Duke, including one he returned 32 yards for a touchdown. Lee Butler had a 65-yard punt return for the Blue Devils' first touchdown.
Sophomore running back Andre Clarke rushed for 59 yards on 14 carries and scored a touchdown for the Eagles (1-2).
GAME NOTEBOOK: Duke improved to 8-1 in games in which it has scored 40 or more points under head coach David Cutcliffe. … Senior wide receiver Conner Vernon had five receptions for 51 yards and passed Desmond Clark of Wake Forest (216) into second place on the ACC's career receptions list. Vernon, who now has 219 catches, needs just 14 receptions to past No. 1 Aaron Kelly (232) of Clemson. … Renfree now has 21 200-yard passing games in his career.
