Arkansas 49, Jacksonville
State 24: Heisman Trophy hopeful Tyler Wilson threw three touchdown passes and Knile Davis scored in his first game since 2010 as the No. 10 Razorbacks overcame a slow start before stopping pesky FCS member Jacksonville State in John L. Smith's first game as head coach.
Davis, who missed last season with a broken ankle,
scored on a 5-run to cap Arkansas' string of 28 unanswered points en route to a
35-21 lead at intermission. The Razorbacks rolled up 348 yards in the first
half.
Wilson was 15-of-18 for 246 yards in the first
half, including two touchdown passes to Chris Gragg. The senior tight end had
six catches for 103 yards in the first half before ending up with eight for
127. Wilson finished 19-of-27 for 369 yards, an Arkansas record for yardage in
a season opener.
The Gamecocks, under former Arkansas coach Jack
Crowe, took a 14-7 lead on Alan Bonner's 4-yard run early in the second quarter
before the Razorbacks took over. Crowe was 9-15 as coach at Arkansas before
resigning after the first game in 1992.
Bonner caught eight passes for 107 yards,
including a 10-yard touchdown with 8 seconds left in the first half.
Jacksonville State quarterback Marques Ivory
finished 14-of-28 for 160 yards and two touchdowns.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Razorbacks have won 12 straight
at home. Arkansas plays Louisiana-Monroe next week in Little Rock before its
showdown with No. 2 Alabama on Sept. 15 in Fayetteville. ... The Gamecocks fell
to 4-15 against FBS teams. They also play at Florida on Nov. 17. ... Smith took
over for Bobby Petrino, who was fired after a motorcycle accident led to the
discovery that he was involved in an inappropriate relationship with a member
of the support staff. ... Davis, who rushed for 1,322 yards in 2010 and was an
All-SEC first-team selection, had 70 yards on 18 carries Saturday. ...
Jacksonville State is the defending Ohio Valley Conference champion.
