Andrew Luck threw two touchdown passes to help No. 9 Stanford to a 31-28 victory over visiting California in the 114th edition of the “Big Game” on Saturday.

Luck threw third-quarter touchdown passes of 4 yards to Levine Toilolo and 10 yards to Ryan Hewitt as the Cardinal (10-1, 8-1 Pac-12 North) built a 15-point lead and hung on to beat the Golden Bears (6-5, 3-5) during a consistent rain.

The victory keeps Stanford in the mix for a spot in the Pac-12 title game entering the season-finale against Notre Dame. The Cardinal will win the North if Oregon loses to Oregon State next Saturday.

Cal cut a 15-point deficit to seven points in the fourth quarter when Zach Maynard threw a 2-yard scoring pass to Spencer Hagan and then hit Marvin Jones on a two-point conversion pass. But Stanford’s Jordan Williamson booted a 35-yard field goal with 3:07 left to make it a two-score contest.

C.J. Anderson scored on a 1-yard run with 14 seconds left for the Golden Bears before the ensuing onside kick was recovered by Stanford’s Coby Fleener.

The Golden Bears scored 13 unanswered points to take a 13-7 lead four-plus minutes into the second quarter.

Keenan Allen caught a 17-yard scoring pass from Maynard and Giorgio Tavecchio kicked field goals of 25 and 19 yards.

Stanford took a 14-13 lead on Tyler Gaffney’s 6-yard scoring run with 7:10 left in the half.

Ty Montgomery scored the Cardinal’s first touchdown on a 34-yard reverse.
