Led by Marcus Coker’s two touchdowns, Iowa avoided back-to-back Big Ten losses with a 24-16 victory over No. 13 Michigan on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.
Coker finished with 132 yards for the Hawkeyes (6-3, 3-2 Big Ten) and James Vandenberg passed for 171 yards and a score as Iowa beat Michigan (7-2, 3-2 Big Ten) for a third consecutive time.
Iowa got a Brad Herman touchdown reception and Mike Meyer’s 42-yard field goal in the second quarter to take a 17-6 lead into halftime. The Hawkeyes extended their lead to 24-9 on Coker’s second touchdown of the game, a 13-yard run with 10:42 left.
But Michigan wouldn’t go away.
Denard Robinson connected with Kevin Koger for a 7-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 24-16 midway through the fourth quarter. After three straight punts, Michigan had a chance to drive for a potential tying score in the closing minutes. The drive, which began at the Michigan 18-yard line, stalled out at Iowa’s 3-yard line after four straight incompletions.
Tthe Wolverines have lost two of their last three games after a 6-0 start.
Robinson finished with 249 total yards for the Wolverines, who lost at Iowa for just the sixth time in 23 tries.
Marvin McNutt caught nine passes for 101 yards for the Hawkeyes, who blew an 11-point fourth-quarter lead last week in a loss to Minnesota.
