Seth Doege tied a career-high with four touchdown passes to help Texas Tech pull off a thrilling 41-38 upset at No. 1 Oklahoma on Saturday night.
The loss snapped a 39-game home winning streak for the Sooners (6-1, 3-1 Big 12), whose BCS title aspirations took a serious hit with the loss.
The Sooners hadn’t lost at Memorial Stadium since a 17-10 loss to TCU on Sept. 3, 2005, and they hadn’t dropped a Big 12 home game since 2001.
After the Red Raiders (5-2, 2-2 Big 12) went ahead 31-7 early in the third quarter, Oklahoma accelerated to a frenetic pace on offense and closed the gap to 31-24 when Landry Jones hit a wide-open Trey Millard in the corner of the end zone on the first play of the fourth quarter.
But Doege responded with a field-goal drive, and then hit Tramain Swindall for a 14-yard score on Texas Tech’s next possession to put the Red Raiders on top 41-24 with only 7 1/2 minutes remaining.
Trailing 41-31 with 2:52 left, Oklahoma again had a chance to pull within one score, but kicker Michael Hunnicut pushed a 28-yard field-goal attempt off the right upright to seal the Sooners’ fate. It was Hunnicut’s second miss of the game.
Oklahoma added a touchdown late to pull within 41-38, but Texas Tech recovered the ensuing onside kick to effectively end the game.
Alex Torres had three receiving touchdowns for Texas Tech, which won for the first time in Norman since 1996. Two of those scores came in the first half, when he took slip screens of 44 and 30 yards to the end zone to help the Red Raiders build a 24-7 halftime edge.
The game was delayed for 1 hour, 45 minutes at the start because of severe thunderstorms.
Oklahoma had trailed for only 23:24 of 360 total minutes so far this season, but Texas Tech had the lead for more than 42 minutes in this game.
