Host Virginia used a relentless running game and a disciplined defense to upset No. 12 Georgia Tech 24-21 on Saturday.
The Cavaliers (4-2, 1-1 ACC) ran for 172 yards in the first half as they built a 24-14 lead. Kevin Parks tied a Virginia freshman record with his seventh rushing TD, a 6-yarder that capped a 12-play opening drive. Perry Jones finished with a career-high 149 yards, the fourth straight game in which Tech has allowed a 100-yard rusher.
With its vaunted option attack, Tech (6-1, 3-1 ACC) came in averaging 46.5 points. But the Jackets were held scoreless in the first quarter for the first time.
Tech opened the second half with a 19-play, 85-yard touchdown drive in which it converted three fourth downs. The Jackets, however, would not score again.
The Cavaliers turned in an inspired effort against their former coach, Tech defensive coordinator Al Groh. He led UVA from 2001-09 before being replaced by his former assistant Mike London.
Each team had a field goal blocked in the first half.
UVA improved to 10-3-1 against the Jackets in Charlottesville.
