Jacory Harris threw three touchdown passes as visiting Miami scored on its first five possessions, but barely held on for a 30-24 victory over North Carolina on Saturday.
The Hurricanes (3-3, 1-2 ACC), who led by as many as 24 points, won their first game in five tries in Chapel Hill.
North Carolina (5-2, 1-2) recovered an onside kick with 45 seconds left, but ran out of time.
The Tar Heels held the nation’s third-leading rusher Lamar Miller to 29 yards, snapping his five-game streak of 100-yard games. But Harris was 16-for-22 passing in the first half for 233 yards -- his career high for a half.
Harris connected with Mike James for a 4-yard touchdown, capping a 13-play, 5:55 opening drive of the game. After North Carolina fumbled the following kickoff, Harris found Tommy Streeter on the first play for a 27-yard scoring strike.
Jake Wieclaw added a 41-yard field goal for a 17-0 lead after one quarter. North Carolina had outscored its opponents 42-3 in the first quarter the first six games.
Miami’s Travis Benjamin had a career-high eight catches for 99 yards and a touchdown.
Tar Heels’ running back Giovani Bernard had 110 yards rushing, extending his streak to five straight 100-yard games.
