Jerry Kill returned to the sidelines after suffering a seizure last week and Marqueis Gray rushed for a school-record 171 yards by a quarterback as Minnesota defeated visiting Miami (Ohio) 29-23 on Saturday.

Kill suffered a seizure at the end of Minnesota's 28-21 loss to New Mexico State. Kill made it through Saturday's game without incident to win his first game as Golden Gophers coach.

Gray broke the previous record of 160 set by Sandy Stephens on Oct. 28, 1961.

Gray also passed for 161 yards and a touchdown, a 1-yard pass to John Rabe early in the fourth quarter to give the Golden Gophers (1-2) a 23-16 lead.

Miami quarterback Zac Dysert, playing in his second game since suffering a lacerated spleen last season, passed for 325 yards and two touchdowns.

Gray became the first Minnesota quarterback since Billy Cochran in 1993 to rush for 100 yards in back-to-back games.

The Golden Gophers rushed for 236 yards as 46 of their 67 plays were on the ground.

Miami (1-1) struggled on special teams, including a botched snap on an extra point attempt and poor kickoffs. Punter Zac Murphy had a punt blocked in the third quarter, which was picked up by Duane Bennett and returned 2 yards for a touchdown to give the Golden Gophers a 29-16 lead with 10:23 left.
