David Wilson rushed 16 times for 162 yards and three touchdowns as No. 13 Virginia Tech cruised to a 66-13 victory over visiting Appalachian State on Saturday.
The Hokies won their first season opener since 2007 and scored 60-plus points for the first time since Oct. 16, 2004, against Florida A&M (62-0).
Wilson registered his first two touchdowns on the next play following an Appalachian State turnover. Wilson scored from 20 yards out on Virginia Tech’s first offensive play of the season, 47 seconds into the game, after Antone Exum recovered a fumble. Wilson ran in from 19 yards with 13:38 left in the second quarter after a Jeron Gouveia-Winslow interception.
Sophomore quarterback Logan Thomas, making his debut as the starter, was 7-for-15 in the first half for 143 yards and a touchdown for a 38-0 halftime lead. Thomas and backup Mark Leal finished with two TD passes each.
Appalachian State, ranked No. 2 in the FCS preseason rankings, was held to 61 yards in the first half. The Mountaineers committed four turnovers and had a punt blocked for a score.
Coach Frank Beamer, who signed a contract extension through 2016 Saturday, won his 199th game at Virginia Tech.
