Andrew Luck began his Heisman campaign by throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for another as No. 6 Stanford rolled to a 57-3 win over visiting San Jose State on Saturday.

Luck, who was pulled after three quarters with the game in control, completed 17-of-26 passes for 171 yards. He started out 7-of-10 while connecting with seven different receivers and moved into fourth place all-time in career passing touchdowns at Stanford.

The Cardinal won their season opener for the fourth straight season and used a fairly conservative offense after taking a 20-0 lead early in the second quarter.

San Jose State lost its 15th straight road game, and its first six drives resulted in three punts, two fumbles and a missed 23-yard field goal. Quarterback Matt Faulkner was 14-of-26 for 184 yards passing.

The Spartans, who went 1-12 last season and were picked to finish next-to-last in the Western Athletic Conference, avoided a shutout when Harrison Waid kicked an 18-yard field goal just before halftime.

Stepfan Taylor rushed 18 times for 61 yards with two third-quarter touchdowns in David Shaw’s debut as Stanford’s head coach.

The Cardinal outrushed the Spartans 141-16 and held San Jose State to minus-2 yards on 24 carries through three quarters.
