Mark Ingram and Eddie Lacy each rushed for a pair of touchdowns, and No. 18 Alabama racked up 545 total yards while pounding No. 7 Michigan State 49-7 in the Capital One Bowl on Saturday in Orlando, Fla. It was the kind of dominant performance the Crimson Tide (10-3) turned in on a regular basis while winning last season's BCS title, and last season's Heisman Trophy winner got things started.
Ingram scored a pair of first-half rushing touchdowns, the second of which gave him 42 in his career, breaking Shaun Alexander's school record. Trent Richardson and receiver Julio Jones also rushed for touchdowns in the first half, giving the Crimson Tide a 28-0 halftime lead. Lacy, the third-string running back, broke touchdown runs of 12 and 62 yards, the latter of which made it 49-0 with 9:10 left in the game.
Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy wrapped up his college career by going 14-of-18 for 225 yards with a 36-yard touchdown pass to Marquis Maze.
Any hopes Michigan State (11-2) had of a comeback were dealt a serious blow when quarterback Kirk Cousins was knocked out of the game in the third quarter. Cousins finished 10-of-19 for 120 yards with an interception. Backup Keith Nichol threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Bennie Fowler to break up the shutout with 5:57 left.
The Spartans finished with negative-13 rushing yards, thanks in large part to five Alabama sacks.
