Virginia Tech’s season turnaround is one step away from complete. The Hokies rolled to their 10th straight win by defeating Virginia 37-7 Saturday at Lane Stadium.
After losing their first two games of the season, which included an embarrassing loss to James Madison, the Hokies head to the ACC title game with a chance at earning the conference’s automatic bid to a BCS bowl.
Tyrod Taylor passed for 176 yards and a touchdown and the Hokies ran for 201 yards and four scores as they methodically pulled away from outmanned Virginia.
The Hokies (10-2, 8-0 ACC) clinched their spot in the ACC title game with a 31-17 win over Miami on Nov. 20. They will face either Florida State or North Carolina State in Charlotte on Dec. 4 for a BCS bowl berth.
Ryan Williams broke open a scoreless game on the second play of the second quarter with a 5-yard touchdown run. After Virginia turned it over on downs near midfield, Taylor hit David Wilson with a 20-yard screen pass for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead.
Chris Hazley added a 40-yard field goal for a 17-0 lead before the half, and Williams scored on 15-yard run in the third to halt any Virginia hopes of a comeback.
The Cavaliers avoided a shutout when Keith Payne caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Ross Metheny with 2:59 left in the fourth quarter.
Virginia (4-8, 1-7) hasn’t beaten Virginia Tech since posting a 35-21 victory in 2003. The Cavaliers managed 291 yards of total offense but were 1-of-12 on third-down conversions. They dropped their fifth straight under first-year coach Mike London.
Virginia Tech has 10 straight wins for the first time since 1999.
