North Carolina held off a late rally on Saturday to edge rival Duke, 24-19 in Durham, N.C. The Tar Heels (7-5, 4-4 ACC), who dealt with a season full of player suspensions and off the field distractions, will play in a bowl game next month.

North Carolina was in total control, leading 24-10 in the fourth quarter, before hanging on to snap a two-game losing streak, while sending Duke (3-9, 1-7 ACC) to its third straight defeat.

Quarterback T.J. Yates completed 28 of 35 passes for 264 yards and a touchdown as the Tar Heels gained 519 yards of offense and dominated time of possession by more than 19 minutes, 39:33 to just 20:27. Anthony Elzy paced the North Carolina ground attack with 116 yards on 23 carries and scored a first half touchdown.

North Carolina’s defense was a force, as well, holding Duke to just 12 yards rushing on 16 attempts.
