Shane Vereen scored on a short touchdown run with 5:29 to play to lift Cal past Washington State 20-13, Saturday in Pullman, Wash.
Vereen rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns to help the Bears (5-4, 3-3 Pac-10) overcome a shaky performance from backup quarterback Brock Mansion.
Mansion, starting in place of injured Kevin Riley, completed 12 of 24 passes for 171 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.
Washington State (1-9, 0-7 Pac-10) led for the majority of the game, but couldn't put together a late scoring drive and dropped its 17th straight conference game. Logwone Mitz scored on a 10-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and Andrew Furney kicked two field goals for the Cougars.
Jeremy Ross scored on a 27-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter to give the Bears' the first lead.
