Led by sophomore running back Edwin Baker, Michigan State defeated Florida Atlantic 30-17 Saturday at Ford Field in Detroit.

The game was originally supposed to be the first at FAU's new stadium in Boca Raton, Fla., but that project was delayed. The game was moved to Detroit with the Owls acting as the host team.

Baker rushed for 183 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown as the Spartans (2-0) gained 224 yards on the ground. A ferocious defense limited the Owls (1-1) to two touchdowns and a field goal.

With All-American linebacker Greg Jones leading the way, the Spartan defense limited the Owls to 45 yards rushing.

Le'Veon Bell, a true freshman, scored MSU's first touchdown, an 8-yard run in the first quarter. Spartan quarterback Kirk Cousins threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to B.J. Cunningham midway through the second quarter.

With Dan Conroy connecting on two field goals, the Spartans led 20-7 at halftime.

On Michigan State's first offensive play of the second half, Bell electrified the crowd with an 80-yard touchdown run that put the Spartans ahead 27-7.

The Owls stormed back as senior quarterback Jeff Van Camp hit tight end Xavier Stinson on a 2-yard touchdown pass and FAU closed to 27-14.

Conroy was successful with his third field goal as the Spartans took a 30-14 lead.

FAU made it 30-17 on a field goal with 2:50 remaining.

Van Camp was 23-of-35 for 215 yards. Cousins was 9-of-17 for 142 yards. Michigan State had 366 yards in total offense.
