Kenjon Barner scored five touchdowns and Cliff Harris returned a pair of punts for scores in a one-sided first half, as No. 11 Oregon rolled to a 72-0 victory over New Mexico on Saturday.

David Paulson caught a touchdown for the defending Pac-10 champion Ducks (1-0), who are coming off an offseason full of drama.

The Ducks figured to be National Championship contenders in 2010, but their chances took a huge blow when Chip Kelly suspended quarterback Jeremiah Masoli – a potential Heisman candidate - for the season due to several off-the field incidents.

Oregon was also without sophomore running back LaMichael James, who got in hot water and was suspended for the opener. James set a Pac-10 freshman record with 1,546 yards last season.

The Ducks, however, still had plenty of talent to get past thel Lobos (0-1), who finished 1-11 last season. Oregon dominated both sides of the ball, outgaining New Mexico, 751 to 119.

The Ducks led 28-0 after one quarter and 59-0 at halftime. Chip Kelly’s team built the huge lead thanks to Barner, who ran for 146 yards on 17 carries – all in the first half. He also caught a 60-yard touchdown.

Redshirt sophomore Darron Thomas, who beat out Nate Costa after Masoli was suspended, completed 12-of-22 passes for 230 yards and a pair of scores in his first career start.
