Joe Phillips drilled a 21-yard game-winning field goal and the No. 24 Utah Utes upended No. 15 Pittsburgh, 27-24, in overtime in a season opener Thursday in Salt Lake City.
Jordan Wynn threw three touchdowns, including two to Jereme Brooks for Utah (1-0), which set a Mountain West Conference record with its 18th straight home win.
Headed to the Pac-10 next season, Utah entered as a three-point favorite against a team that many picked to win the Big East Conference.
Pittsburgh's Dan Hutchins kicked a 30-yard field goal with three seconds left, sending the game into overtime.
Utah chose to defend and Brian Blechen picked off first-year starter Tino Sunseri on the first play. The interception paved the way for Phillips’ clutch kick.
Wynn’s third touchdown of the game – a 61-yard strike to DeVonte Christopher – gave the Utes a 24-13 lead with 7:49 left. But Pittsburgh answered quickly, as Jonathan Baldwin hauled in a 44-yard pass from Sunseri just 48 seconds later.
Baldwin also caught the ensuing two-point conversion, pulling the Panthers to 24-21.
A first-year starter, Sunseri rallied the Panthers (0-1) from an 11-point deficit, but he would like his last throw back. He was 16-of-28 with 184 yards and one touchdown.
