Nick Emery scored 22 points to help BYU beat visiting Colorado 79-71 on Saturday night at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah.

Eric Mika had 17 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three blocked shots for BYU (7-3). T.J. Haws scored 16 points. Yoeli Childs added 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Derrick White scored 21 points for Colorado (7-3), which went more than eight minutes without a basket down the stretch. Xavier Johnson scored 17 points. George King had 14 points and 12 rebounds.

BYU took an early 12-5 lead on a 3-pointer by Haws and went up 21-13 on a 3-pointer by L.J. Rose. Colorado slowly chipped away at BYU's lead, cutting the deficit to four on a dunk by Johnson and getting within three on a dunk by White.

The Buffaloes tied the game on a 3-pointer by White with 48 seconds to play in the opening period. Mika's jumper with 11 seconds left gave the Cougars a 40-38 lead at the break.

Haws made a 3-pointer to put BYU up 48-42 early in the second half. The Cougars extended the lead to 10 on a jumper by Childs, but again the Buffaloes battled back. They got within six on a three-point play by Johnson, cut the deficit to three on a 3-pointer by Johnson and took a 54-53 lead on two free throws by King.

The teams traded leads a number of times until a three-point play by Haws sparked a 12-2 run for the Cougars. Thomas Akyazili's 3-pointer with 8:54 to go was the Buffaloes' last field goal until White made a 3-pointer with 41 seconds remaining.

BYU shot 44.8 percent from the field and made 9 of 19 from 3-point range. Colorado shot 38.7 percent and made 7 of 29 from beyond the arc.
