UNLV 57, Temple 50: Christian Wood scored 18 points with 13 rebounds and sparked a second-half surge as the Rebels prevailed in a defensive struggle at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic consolation game in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Wood scored 16 points in the second half and finished with four blocked shots for UNLV (3-1), which trailed the entire first half before prevailing despite shooting 38.9 percent from the field. Cody Doolin scored 10 points and Goodluck Okonoboh added seven rebounds and three blocks.

Will Cummings scored 13 of his 21 points in the first half for the Owls (2-2), who led 27-24 at intermission before a miserable offensive second half. Quenton DeCosey added 11 points, but Temple finished at 24.1 percent from the field and was 4-of-21 from 3-point range.

Wood’s dunk with 8:10 to play sparked a 7-0 surge, Cody Doolin followed with a 3-pointer 40 seconds later and a layup from Wood with 6:28 to go gave the Rebels a 46-37 advantage. Temple went 1-for-16 from the field during a 12-minute stretch of the second half but stayed close by hitting 9-of-12 free throws, and drew within 51-48 on Cummings’ three-point play with 2:13 remaining.

DeCosey missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer on the ensuing possession and after a Cummings miss in traffic, UNLV’s Patrick McCaw took the rebound the length of the floor for a layup and a five-point lead with 50 seconds to go. The Rebels sealed it with four free throws in the final 34 seconds.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Wood recorded his third double-double in four games and his 3-pointer 48 seconds into the second half gave UNLV its first lead of the two-game Coaches vs. Cancer event at 29-27. … Cummings scored 39 points in the tournament, going for 18 in a loss to Duke on Friday. … DeCosey scored five points in the opening five minutes as Temple built a 9-2 advantage.
